June 2002

WA Library Technicians Group

Happy LIW! I hope that you had the chance to attend some of the activities that were held to celebrate Library and Information Week, particularly the Library Technicians Breakfast at the Boatshed.

Many thanks to Joanne Comerford for her informative tour and the use of the meeting room at the Murray Street Library of Curtin University on the 14th of May. This library is primarily to support the students and staff of the Graduate School of Business.

We have a few events coming up in the next few months notably the AGM on the 24th of June, when we will need to form a new executive committee. All positions on the committee become vacant at this time. I will not be renominating as convenor and Karen has indicated she will not be renominating as treasurer.

This is an opportune time to recap the events we have planned for the rest of this year, as well as the ongoing programs that operate under the umbrella of WALTs.

First and foremost is the Graduate Library Technician Mentoring program, which has been restarted this year and which is gaining in momentum. A professional organisation can only grow through the enthusiasm of the younger members coming through, and it is vital that the WA Library Technicians Group offers support and cpd opportunities to the new graduates who are just starting their careers.

Secondly there is the Student Conference Grant - this grant is made possible by the generosity of the Fremantle Library Technicians Conference committee and is a grant for a student to attend a National Library Technicians Conference.

Thirdly, there are the events we have planned for the rest of this year - the metadata seminar coming up in July, and the South West Forum to be held in Bunbury in September. A lot of work has gone into organising the South West Forum, and I am sure it is going to be a very successful event.

It is essential that we have an executive to keep the WA Library Technicians Group active, so I would like to encourage our members to think carefully about nominating for one of the positions. Should you wish for more information about any of the positions please contact myself (b.bruce@curtin.edu.au) or Brenda Ellen (b.ellen@sro.wa.gov.au).

I look forward to seeing you at the AGM!

Until next month...
Bonnie Rae Bruce
Convenor, WA Library Technicians Group.
