Library and Information Week 2002

Libraries change lives!

Libraries store the energy that fuels the imagination. They open up windows to the world and inspire us to explore and achieve, and contribute to improving our quality of life. Libraries change lives for the better.
-Sidney Sheldon

Kerry Smith Testimonial

Dear Colleagues

This note is to thank the many of you who have sent me your best wishes and congratulations on my receipt of an ALIA Fellowship. At last, I have become a FALIA! I would also like to thank the WA cheer squad who were present at the ALIA AGM in Sydney on May 20th, 2002 when the award was formally presented and fellow West Australian Imogen Garner who read the abridged citation. And thank you to the WA Forum for, what was for me, a fun night on Friday 24th May, when a number of us truly celebrated and shared in a camaraderie some of us thought was a thing of the past. We should celebrate more often. I do hope that your Library Week activities were as much fun, too.

With best wishes
Kerry Smith, k.smith@curtin.edu.au

City of Swan Libraries

On Saturday 18th May, the City of Swan libraries held a "Monster Book Sale". During the afternoon we sold used items, offered face painting for children, offered tea and coffee, as well as a colour-in corner for children. The afternoon was a great success.

As the young people's services librarian, I wanted to offer a programme for young adults. I organised for artist, Beba Hall, to conduct art workshops with teenagers. We visited 3 high schools in our area. The aim of the programme was for the students to design an image which reflected Libraries change lives. Prize money will be awarded for the best image, as well as the opportunity to have the artwork placed on stickers on bags.

I also held an art workshop at the Altone Park Library for teenagers, with an artist, with the same concept in mind. All the workshops were very inspiring, and the teenagers gained a lot from having "an artist in residence" visit them. The competition closes on June 28th -so I will keep you informed.

The City of Swan libraries put up displays to celebrate "Library and Information Week".

SWELL - South West Library Link

Kerry Jeffreys, one person Librarian at The Department of Agriculture Bunbury office, hosted the SWELL group (South West Library Link) on Saturday afternoon 18th May. Kerry spoke about her role as a part-time one person special librarian after giving a tour of the building. She was so passionate about her position there were offers to fill her shoes!

Following on from Kerry, Kaye Carvosso and Marion Griffin gave their impression on the recent stimulating Children's Book Council Conference. Marion brought along some books from which both Kaye and Marion gave an insight into the authors and their work.

Afternoon tea out in the garden was a relaxing way to "network" on a sunny autumn afternoon.

Thank you to the Librarians who were able to attend.

More news from Bunbury

If you have a room I thought that I would let you know that the Bunbury Public Library has purchased and installed a colour Clearview Spectrum Close Circuit Television (CCTV). This device comes complete with full colour 17" tilt-adjustable monitor, auto zoom focus and contrast, fingertip controls, three viewing modes including reverse video and photographic, a laser positioning guide and a mobile table reading and writing surface. It is for use by visually impaired people and works by using a camera to magnify printed text and images; these images are then presented many times larger on to a monitor.

This is the first time a CCTV has been available at the Bunbury Library and we are very excited to be able to offer this service to the public.
