April 2002

CPD column

Eilishia Bardoe has resigned as CPD co-ordinator after serving in the position from September 1999 to January 2002. I wish to thank Eilishia for the many hours of hard work she has put into her role as co-ordinator. The highlights of Eilishia's term as co-ordinator include the "Is your manager bad for your library?" workshop which was so popular that all places were filled the morning it was advertised, the internet workshop in Geraldton, the professional reading group meeting to discuss Ross Harvey's article from the Australian Library Journal, the leadership seminar, and her report on the National Policy Congress. I also wish to thank Joanne Baines, Ruth Schofield, and Jeanette Hill for their hard work and dedication to the CPD committee last year, especially as Joanne and Ruth have left the committee due to other commitments.

Details of this year's programme of CPD events will be outlined in next month's column. Our first event will be a professional reading group meeting on April 17 to discuss Ian McCallum's paper: "Returning to Ithaca to get on with the mission: Defining value in terms of our contribution to our customers and our profession." Australian Library Journal 51.1 (2002): 7-19 (also published at: http://conferences.alia.org.au/libtec2001/papers/mccallum.html).

As the new CPD co-ordinator I am seeking new committee members to help organise the events. Being on the committee involves monthly meetings, taking responsibility for particular tasks (booking the venue, contacting speakers, sorting out the catering, and so on), and receiving lots of e-mails. I wish to emphasise to anyone feeling diffident about volunteering that being on the committee counts towards CPD hours, new graduates are just as welcome as people who have 20 years experience, it gives the opportunity to learn useful skills, and it can be fun. Many hands make light work and I look forward to hearing from several volunteers. My telephone number is 08 9490 1730 and my e-mail address is ctpeters@myrealbox.com.
