ALIA Victoria2005 annual reportALIA Victoria aims to meet objectives 3 and 5 of ALIA - these being, 3. To ensure the high standard of personnel engaged in information provision and foster their professional interests and aspirations and - 5. To encourage people to contribute to the improvement of library and information services through support and membership of the Association. EventsALIA Victoria has enjoyed somewhat of a revival in the past few years with some popular events that have been attended by a good cross-section of our profession. During 2005 we have organised the following events for members -
ALIA Vic organised a function at the European Bier Café as a farewell and recognition of the work that Moyra McAllister has contributed to both ALIA and the profession. This event was attended by past and present colleagues of Moyra as well as people who came along for a purely social event. As a gift to Moyra, a scrapbook was prepared full of inspirational quotes related to libraries and librarians as well as photos and well wishes from people who attended the function.
The tour of the parliamentary library was a particularly successful event due to jointly hosting this with the Vic Specials group, with whom we have also recently shared our end of year function. This allows us to share the organisational aspect of planning these events as well as encourage a wider group of members to attend.
We organised an afternoon tour of the Public Records Office of Victoria that included a tour of their compactus storage areas and viewing of historical holdings. This was to gain a behind the scenes look at the brand new facilities that the Public Records Office also shares with the National Archives.
Steve O'Connor presented his paper on Plagiarism and commercial publishers from Online 2005. This was well attended with a cross section of professionals and students. The presentation included a lively discussion at its conclusion.
Planning is underway for the end of year function with the ALIA Special Libraries (Vic) group. To be held in late November, this event is always popular with members. CommitteeOur very dedicated committee come from a wide range of libraries and backgrounds, which also allows us to reach a wide range of people in the library community. This year we bid farewell to Ian McGregor who has been a pivotal part of our committee as a treasurer and wonderful 'do-er'. We made a call for new committee members and were inundated with expressions of interest. ALIA Victoria is in a strong position to head into 2006 with a stable and enthusiastic committee, planning events that appeal to a wide range of members. Jenelle Cleary, convenor, ALIA Victoria |
