PD events and activities

Library Lover's Day Celebration
The ALIA year and 2008 program were launched with a Library Lovers' Day celebration at the New Sydney Hotel. Twenty members joined the committee for wine and finger food, and were given special badges to wear during the event.

'Growing your career' conference
ALIA Tas organised and ran a one-day conference for local librarians and library technicians. This was held at the Rosny Library on Sunday 12th October, and was attended by 38 people. The theme was 'Growing your career: what does the future hold for you' focused on the current state of the library industry, and on personal choices and personal development plans for career growth. Guest speakers were Dr Gillian Hallam from QUT, Mary McGuiness of the Institute of Type Development, and a panel of 5 local library workers who shared their stories about career choices and changes. The conference was supported by the Australian Law Librarians' Association (TAS) who provided the conference bags. Sue Hutley, Executive Director of ALIA also attended to support the conference. Feedback on the conference was overwhelmingly positive.

Networking and social

Library and Information Week Quiz
The Quiz Night has become an annual tradition for ALIA TAS in Library and Information Week. The 2008 Quiz Night was held on 22nd May with the theme of The International Year of the Potato, and the questions were tailored accordingly. Sixty people attended. The venue was Lazenbys at UTAS, who provided sound equipment and catering with drinks available at the bar.

End of Year/Christmas drinks
The final get together for the year was a social event held in conjunction with the Tasmanian Branch of the Australian Law Librarians Group and held in the main reception room at Parliament House on 11th December. Twenty people attended what was again a very successful and enjoyable event.

Membership recruitment

New student welcome function
ALIA TAS hosted a function at the UTAS Science Library for students enrolled in the Graduate Diploma of Information Management, on 4th July. The lunch was attended by ALIA members, LIS professionals who had hosted a student placement, and the 2008 crop of students. It was intended that this function would include the presentation to the 2007 winner of the ALIA Student Award, but this was not possible due to timetabling difficulties with the School of Information Systems.
