ALIA SchoolsJuly-December 2001 reportPurpose and goals as stated in ALIA Group Application
Activities from 30 July 2001 including an evaluation of the achievement of the group in relation to the purpose and goalsTogether with SLAV, the group co-hosted the visit of Dr Sheila Offman Gersh, City College of New York, Centre for School Development. Dr Gersh presented two full day conferences, one at Melbourne on 30 July and the other at Geelong on 3 August. She spoke on Teaching and Learning with the Internet - Resourceful Solutions. The total number of SLAV and ALIA participants was in excess of 200 and evaluation responses were very positive. To give Dr Gersh insights into the local school library scene, she was invited by ALIA Schools Victoria to visit two secondary schools: Overnewton, Keilor and Marcellin College, Bulleen. At Overnewton, Dr Gersh had lunch with the Principal and met with other senior staff. The Principal, Deputy Principal, Information Technology Co-ordinator and several other members of the College staff attended an afternoon tea at Marcellin College and discussed the role of school libraries with Dr Gersh and members of the ALIA committee. This provided a great opportunity to lobby for school libraries at the local level. These activities fulfilled the following goals: 1, 2, 3, 4, 5 and 6. On 20 October, ALIA Schools Victoria conducted a professional development session titled Intranetting. This full day conference focused on copyright issues, the commercial software applications available to assist with the development of intranets and three models showing how different school libraries had contributed to the development of intranets at their schools. The thirty participants were delighted with the day and stated in their evaluation comments that they found the day to be both thought provoking and practical. This activity fulfilled the following goals: 1, 2, 3 and 6. The group has held scheduled meetings on 21 July, 18 August, 20 October and 17 November. At the meeting on 18 August a mail out to members was collated. This contained a newsletter, a flyer inviting participation in the October professional development session, the Agenda for the Annual General Meeting held on 17 November, a flyer advertising Jamie McKenzie's Melbourne Seminars and flyer from Masterfile, one of the software systems to be demonstrated on 20 October. These meetings fulfilled the following goals: 1, 2, 3, 6 and 8. Three members of ALIA Schools Victoria have volunteered to be members of the joint ALIA/ASLA committees that are to be formed in the near future. In addition a representative from the committee will attend the National Policy Congress. In these ways ALIA Schools Victoria is fulfilling goal 7. In February 2001, under the auspices of ALIA, the Committee granted a scholarship to support a member's attendance at the ASLA XVII Conference to be held in early October in Queensland. The Report from this professional development activity was tabled at the October meeting and further action will occur in 2002 at the 16 March Conference of ALIA Schools Victoria, titled Leadership and Information Literacy. This award fulfilled the following goals: 2, 3, 5, 6 and 7. Forward planning 2002Planning for professional development to be held in 2002 is in progress. Prue Mercer from the ALIA Information Literacy Forum will be approached to be the keynote speaker at the first conference that will be held on 16 March 2002. Other sessions on the day will focus on lifelong learning, leadership and the development of information literacy policy statements. Expenditure compared with budgetOverall, the budget for July 2001 to December 2001 has anticipated the expenditure and income very well. However, there is one expense that was not fully anticipated and this was for photocopying. The guest speaker on copyright at the October seminar submitted an enormous amount of material to be copied. It was agreed that in view of the nature and importance of the topic that the photocopying could be done. The invoice for this will not be submitted until later in the year, when the school tallies photocopying costs. Issues to be referred to the Board of DirectorsIn anticipation of the formation of two joint ALIA/ASLA Committees in July 2001, the group did not apply to keep the ALIA National Schools Section functioning. These joint committees are yet to be formed. At this time of the year, there is a sense of urgency about the formation of these committees as there is currently no national voice for school libraries within the ALIA structure.
