March 17 Conference Learning in a changing world: money matters to learning

Learning in a changing world is a series of five books prepared by ALIA and ASLA and published by ACER to support teacher librarians and school libraries in the 21st century. This series will be the focus for professional learning during 2012

This morning seminar is for primary and secondary teacher librarians and others who are responsible for school library services. The authors of two of the books in the series will provide practical applications for:

June 2 Conference Learning in a changing world: curriculum integration

July 28 Conference Reading in a Changing World

This morning seminar is for primary and secondary teacher librarians, as well as others who are responsible for school library services and/or engaging students in reading and developing a love of literature. Ambassador for the Premier's Reading Challenge and author, David Metzenthen will be our guest speaker for the morning.

ALIA Schools Online Forum 29 August – 7 September 2012: National Standards for Teacher-Librarians

The second online forum for 2012 will focus on how teacher-librarians can demonstrate that they are meeting the Australian Institute for Teaching and School Leadership’s (AITSL) National Professional Standards for Teachers. Each weekday for the duration of the forum, a different standard shall be highlighted and participants invited to share examples of their practice that illustrate how they are currently meeting the standard and reflect on what else they could do in the future.

The online forum will be conducted via the ALIA Schools wiki

October 20 Conference Learning in a Changing World: Connect, Communicate, Collaborate and Virtual Worlds

Learning in a changing world is a series of five books prepared by ALIA and ASLA, which was published by ACER to support teacher librarians and school libraries in the 21st century. This series is the focus for ALIA Schools professional learning during 2012.

This is a morning seminar for primary and secondary teacher librarians and others who are responsible for school library services and/or engaging students in 21st century learning environments. Judy O’Connell, co-author of Connect, communicate, collaborate and Virtual worlds will unpack her two books from this series through lectures, a discussion and a hands on workshop

June 4 Conference: A World of Stories, a reading environment - BOOKED OUT

This is a morning seminar for primary and secondary teacher librarians as well as others who are responsible for providing school library services. The seminar will provide participants with:

  • strategies for the promotion of reading and the enrichment of literature experiences
  • display ideas, activities and strategies with this year's Book Week theme: One World, many stories.
  • hearing from experts who are members of organisations promoting literature and literacy in schools and the wider community.

Online Forum: Positives, perils and pitfalls of eBooks and eReaders

This year our online forum is titled: Positives, perils and pitfalls of eBooks and eReaders. This is a result of a half day seminar held in March and repeated in August of this year. Participants were keen to continue their discussion on this intriguing topic. To aid the discussion ALIA Schools has set up a wiki page. You are cordially invited to join this wiki and actively engaging in the dialogue. Kerrie Smith, who was the keynote speaker, has indicated that she would be happy to join the discussion too, as well as many of the guest speaker who were on the panel.

February 13 Conference: Collections on a knife ($$) edge

A morning seminar for primary & secondary teacher-librarians with an interest in collection development: budgeting, policy and evaluation for both digital and print resources. The focus was on how to get value for the dwindling dollar and how to assess and evaluate what to purchase.

February Conference: Critical literacies for the digital learner

In this seminar Sylvia Guidara re-visited in more detail the use of digital learning technologies to enhance student learning. Participants explored digital learning & how we can skill our students to be critically literate in the library, the classroom & a variety of online environments, in particular, the State Library ergo website.

August Online Conference: Web 2.0, Web 3.0,.......

This online discussion was conducted as a blog open to ALIA Schools e-list members only. The treats and trials of Web 2.0 projects for school libraries were discussed.

October Conference: Print and beyond: digital collection development for the 21st century
Collections will be a "mash-up" and fear not the exhilarating technology possibilities were the messages fascinatingly explored by keynote speaker, Paul Reekie, former editor -in- chief of CSIRO journal and book group, now running CSIRO Publishing as a business enterprise. Paul Reekie presentation

The challenges of developing a balanced collection in the digital age were practically workshopped by Dr Jan Murray, director of Murray Consulting & Training and Dr Mary Carroll, lecturer at Victoria University and RMIT.

Wilma Kurvink, Head of Wesley College Libraries, shared her journey of recent research into the viability of the e-book for schools and school libraries. Many thanks to these experts for sharing their experience and work with the ALIA Schools community.
