InterALIA, July 2005

ALIA SA mission statement and goals

The ALIA SA committee revised our mission statement earlier this year and it is now available to members.

ALIA SA - vision for future

ALIA SA will enable and encourage education and development of library and information workers in South Australia. It will be a voice for library professionals, within the association, the broader information industry and to the communities we serve.

Goals for 2005-2006

Goal 1
To promote the flow of information and ideas through initiating dialogue and debate on issues affecting the profession.

Goal 2
Supporting members of the profession by supporting a mentoring program, welcoming new members, and recognising the achievements of members through the sponsorship of awards.

Goal 3
To facilitate forums where knowledge can be created, shared and disseminated and in this way collaboratively contribute to the professional development of members.

Goal 4
To promote and raise the ALIA profile within the local industry by establishing connections with educational institutions (both tertiary and secondary), major SA library organisations and other professional associations.

Structure for 2005-2006

The ALIA SA committee should consist of:

  • Representatives from each ALIA group active within SA (not necessarily the convenor of each group).
  • A regional ALIA member living outside the metropolitan area (to participate virtually and attend meetings in person when possible).
  • An ALIA student member from the UniSA or TAFE programmes.

Should the committee not include at least one representative from each of the groups listed above, committee members should be actively recruited from these areas.

The committee should also issue standing invitations to attend meetings to:

  • The Australian Society of Archivists.
  • The Records Management Association.
  • Other professional bodies.

Every three months, an invitation should be issued to attend meetings to a senior SA library manager:

  • The state librarian.
  • The three university librarians.
  • Senior management from the TAFE libraries and/or the major public libraries.

Or

ALIA SA should hold one event per year to act as a forum for senior managers to meet cross-sectorally and discuss current local trends and issues.

Calendar of events

ALIA SA should be responsible for the following events each year:

  • Introduction to library students at TAFE and UniSA (March/April).
  • Library and Information Week (May).
  • Student Awards Night (May/June).
  • National Policy Congress (August/September).
  • Biennial Regional Conference (October, every 2nd year).
  • ALIA SA Christmas event (November/December).
