ALIA Agriculture and Environment Group News

Newsletter

15 July

The end of the financial year is here so it is time for our annual print newsletter, to contact everyone and let you know what is happening. Although we now have 126 members only 96 have joined our e-list. Please join if you have an e-mail address as most of our communication is through the list. For details on joining the list go to http://lists.alia.org.au/mailman/listinfo/aliaAGENDIS/ and follow the directions.

This year ALIA has changed the budget deadline and we need to have our information for next year submitted by 1 September. This is also a good opportunity for us to have a look at the group, its aims and activities, and decide if we want to keep going in the current form. At present our aims are 'to promote the sharing of information between librarians working in agriculture and environmental libraries and to provide support to members working in these libraries. Geographic coverage is Australia-wide and commercial, government and university. Activities include the aliaAGENDIS e-list, and one or two face-to-face meetings per year in conjunction with conferences (self-funded).'

In terms of our direction, one idea is to set up a mentoring program for information workers in the Agricultural sector. John Elias has been seeking some information from ALIA who are very supportive of the idea. There are a number of resources which can be used by State groups to set up mentoring programs - further details available from ALIA's website http://www.alia.org.au/education/cpd/mentoring/. Change, and learning new skills, can be confronting but with help from a mentor it can be that much easier! As well, passing on our wisdom (yes we all have it!) as a mentor, to a new information industry member, can be extremely rewarding and helps to maintain knowledge and standards within the industry.

Another idea is to highlight a particular library each month on our page on the ALIA website so we can all get to know about each other's libraries and information services. So if anyone would like to put up their hand to 'showcase' their library just send the details to Marsha or John and we will put it up on the web.

A meeting room has been organised for a lunch time get-together at the 10th Asia Pacific Special, Health and Law Librarians' Conference. It will be on Tuesday 26 August in Meeting Room 8/9, commencing at 12:30pm. Please collect your lunch first. Anyone who has any ideas on topics for discussion or speakers, please circulate them on the e-list.

The National Policy Congress is coming up 19-20 September in Canberra. Agenda and papers can be foundhttp://www.alia.org.au/.au/governance/nac/2003/. Regional meetings are still being organised but so far we know about Brisbane (24 July), Canberra (6 August) and Melbourne (13 August). If anyone would like to represent us at one of these meetings please contact Marsha or John. If everyone could have a look at the papers, we could have a discussion on the e-list - this is your only opportunity to have some input to ALIA's planning.

Now that the group has been going for two years, it also seems like a good time to have elections for office-bearers. A group needs to have at least two office-bearers, a convenor and a secretary/treasurer. Obviously, both need to be ALIA members.

Given the logistics of our group, the easiest way to do this is to invite people to nominate themselves for these roles - if we have more than 2 people the secretary and treasurer roles can be separated. Please send your nominations by 8 August to:

Liz Wilkes
Librarian
Elizabeth Macarthur Agricultural Institute
PMB 8 Camden NSW 2570
liz.wilkes@agric.nsw.gov.au.nospam (please remove '.nospam' from address)

It's membership renewal time so we hope you will all select our group again, and join the list so we can keep the group active.

Marsha Reilly (Convenor) marsha.reilly@agric.nsw.gov.au.nospam (please remove '.nospam' from address)
John Elias (Secretary/Treasurer) jelias@mla.com.au.nospam (please remove '.nospam' from address)
