Number 230: September 2002

Wanted: local presence person | ACT Health and Specials | Farewelling Michael Evans | PEARLS

Wanted: local presence person
A local presence person is needed to assist ALIA's ACT groups for the equivalent of three days a month, following the resignation of Judith Brooker, our first ACT local presence person. The work to be undertaken will support ACTive ALIA's objectives and activities. This may include acting as a local contact point for enquiries, co-ordination and liaison, organising activities, financial and other administrative work.

If you are interested, please contact Helen Roberts on 02 6125 4068 or helen.roberts@anu.edu.au.

ACT Health and Specials
A joint meeting of the ACT Health Libraries Forum and ACT Specials was held on Wednesday 6 November at the Australian Institute of Health and Welfare.

Jennefer Nicholson, Marie Murphy and Georgina Dale from the ALIA National Office spoke about the LISEKA project. They looked at the educational framework and core capabilities documents and discussed CPD. A useful reminder was that CPD for experienced practitioners should be at the level of their expertise. Thanks to Judith Abercromby and Jill Buckley Smith for organising this meeting.

Farewelling Michael Evans
Michael Evans, associate director, Academic Services, is retiring from the Australian National Library at the end of this year. Michael has been an office holder in the former ACT Branch and in URLS. He is now a committee member in URLs. As friends and colleagues we want to farewell him in fine style. So we are planning two events: an afternoon tea for SIS/library Staff and Michael's many other friends and colleagues in the university, and a dinner for current and former SIS/library staff. We are contacting a number of ex-staff that Michael worked with to let them know about these functions but, as our memories are less than perfect, help and suggestions are most welcome!

The afternoon tea will be on Wednesday 11 December at 3:30pm in Hancock Library at the Australian National University. This function will be Michael's 'formal' farewell and we expect to see many of Michael's many friends and colleagues. This function will be catered, so it would be helpful if you could let Kathy or Paul know if you are likely to attend.

The farewell dinner for SIS/library staff will be on Wednesday 4 December at the North Lyneham China Tea Club at 7:30pm. A banquet has been arranged at a cost of $28 per head. The restaurant can also prepare meals to meet special requests or dietary needs. Would you please let Kathy Collier [kathy.collier@anu.edu.au] or Paul McNamara [paul.mcnamara@anu.edu.au] know if you are attending.

PEARLS
PEARLS (Previously Employed Australian Retired Librarians) met for the last time in 2002 on 14 October. Jon Prance was absent but advised that he was unable to continue as convenor. Those present sent him a card thanking him for his contribution to PEARLS. His efforts over the last two years were greatly appreciated.

Discussion covered topics from raising money for the University of East Timor Library to the venue for our meetings next year. Gabrielle Watt hosted a garage sale at the end of October and $310.00 was raised for the library. We decided to move the venue for our meetings next year to the Bookplate at NLA and our first date for 2003 is 10 February.
