Midwinter dinner, quiz and awards night We then sat down to dinner. Some libraries like the High Court of Australia Library, the ACT Library Service and the ANU Law Library made up tables while other tables represented a mix of libraries and others including lectures, professors and those from ALIA. Soon everyone was getting up again as they were told that one chair at each table had a secret mark (a red spot under the seat) that entitled the occupant to a book prize donated by the UC Co-op Bookshop. Chicken Marbella and warm lamb salad were just two of the delicious dishes that were then enjoyed over a glass or two of wine. After the main course we had the prize presentations (see the feature article in the next issue on the prize winners celebrating their achievements). Then dessert, and finally the Trivia Quiz. Colin Steele did an excellent job as Quiz Master, enthusiastically assisted by Debbie Trew. Questions were admirably chosen to reflect a breadth of knowledge, from the classics to popular moderns. The ACT Library Service won the prize for the table with the highest overall score. More book prizes for everyone at the winning table and for the person at the other tables who recorded the answers, provided again by the Co-op Bookshop. It was a very enjoyable evening for all who attended. National Simultaneous Storytime will be at exactly 11:00am, 4 September 2002 Following the highly successful inaugural National Storytime during Library and Information Week 2001, ALIA has invited all public library services, primary and pre-school libraries, and early childhood centres to participate in National Simultaneous Storytime 2002. The ACT Public Library is participating. Branches will enhance this national event with their own special chook stories, puppets, fun and games, designed to entertain and stimulate the love of reading and listening. The National Simultaneous Storytime will take place during Literacy and Numeracy Week at 11:00am on Wednesday 4 September. The picture book, Mrs Wilkinsons Chooks, will be read simultaneously in libraries throughout the country. Mrs Wilkinsons Chooks is written by popular Australian author Leone Peguero, illustrated by Mike Spoor, and published by Random House. The target audience for the storytime is children aged three to eight years: and their parents, grandparents, creches, teachers, day-carers, pre-schools, early childhood centres, kindergartens and community groups. The aim of the National Simultaneous Storytime is to give exposure to childrens services in libraries by celebrating one of the most popular activities: story time. By attracting and engaging young audiences, the event provides the opportunity to promote the value of reading and books, and the important role which libraries play in stimulating literacy. The National Simultaneous Storytime is sponsored by Random House and Dymocks Booksellers. Dymocks stores will provide a ten per cent discount on the purchase Mrs Wilkinsons Chooks during the month of September on presentation of the special promotional bookmark which will be forwarded to registered participants. ALIA National Office is co-ordinating the event, including registrations of interest and involvement, and distribution of posters, bookmarks and certificates. Regional co-ordinators of National Simultaneous Storytime have been appointed. Make sure that you advise them of your activity. The contacts are:
