ACTive ALIA convenor's column

In the dark midwinter I have a couple of exciting events to tell you about: the first is our midwinter dinner, quiz and prize giving, and the second is the appointment of ALIA's new Member Liaison Officer, who has agreed to give a talk to the monthly meeting on 11 September. We are also continuing to publish entries to the Libraries change lives competition as they have created a lot of interest. This month they concentrate on how libraries change the lives of older users. Next month they will focus on the use of libraries by children and families.

Midwinter dinner and quiz night
Friday 9 August

ACTive ALIA is hosting a quiz night and midwinter dinner at the University of Canberra Staff club at 7:00pm on Friday 9 August. Book prizes will be donated by the University Coop Bookshop Canberra. The evening will commence with pre-dinner drinks and nibbles at 7:00pm followed by dinner at 7:30pm. During the evening awards will be presented to outstanding students graduating in Library and Information Studies from the University of Canberra.

For a modest $40.00 (including pre-dinner drinks and wine), you can enjoy a great evening with fantastic food prepared by the team that recently won the caterer-of-the-year award for the ACT. Why not make up a table and join the celebration on 9 August, or come alone and share the fun at another table? All tables are circular and seat eight.

The UC Staff Club is located in Building 1, Level A (near the hub). If you need directions please see the University map at http://www.canberra.edu.au/uc/about/campmap.html.

To confirm your table RSVP Judith Brooker by Tuesday 6 August (absolutely vital) at judith.brooker@alianet.alia.org.au For further details contact Helen Roberts, ph 02 6125 4068, or helen.roberts@anu.edu.au

New member liaison officer's talk on Wednesday 11 September
Georgina Dale has joined the ALIA office in the new position of member liaison officer. Her key responsibilities are working with groups and continuing professional development (CPD). On Wednesday 11 September she will talk to us about what she will do for groups and members at the ACTive ALIA monthly meeting in 4th floor Conference Room, at the National Library of Australia at 5:30pm. Georgina has extensive experience in the library and information area and has worked in Sydney, Canberra, Victoria and Western Australia. In Canberra she worked in Defence. She has also been involved in groups as an office-bearer and in setting up and establishing groups. Amongst other activities she founded the Opal one-person library group, worked on Synergy in Sydney for Health libraries, was on the Library and Information Week subcommittee of WAY Forum and convened the Western Australia Knowledge Information Specials of WA. She is looking forward to working with you all and hopes that you won't hesitate to contact her if she can be of assistance (ph 02 6215 8229, fax 02 6282 2249).

I look forward to seeing you at the Midwinter dinner and quiz night on Friday 9 August, where you can also meet Georgina Dale, our new member liaison officer.
