ACTive ALIA convenor's column
Sixty-four new ALIA groups to choose from!
These new groups have been established as of 1 July 2001 to replace the previous branches, sections and special interest groups. You can sign up to belong to one or more of these groups at no additional cost when you renew your membership.
ACT Groups
ACTive ALIA
ACTive ALIA replaces the previous ACT ALIA Branch. ACTive ALIA provides communication among library professionals of all sectors, arranges and supports professional development activities, promotes the role of libraries and lobbies on local matters, and promotes ALIA membership. Planned activities include an annual seminar, midwinter dinner, regular speakers, networking and mentoring. Communication includes the proACTive newsletter. Covers the ACT and region (including Cooma and the Far South Coast).
ALIA Library Technicians (ACT)
Promotes professional development opportunities for members in the ACT and district, and provides support to library technicians with emphasis on networking and mentoring. Represents the interest of the membership on relevant issues and promotes membership of ALIA. Encourages students and newly qualified technicians, including through an award. Planned activities include seminars.
ALIA URLs (ACT)
Provides professional development and training opportunities to all levels of library staff and information on the direction in which libraries are developing. Provides a network of communication and support, and aims to enhance inter-institutional information exchange within region and to liaise with other relevant organisations. Planned activities include seminars, monthly meetings with guest speakers and workshops.
ALIA ACT Specials
Provides networking and professional development opportunities for special librarians and libraries in the ACT and region. Provides benchmarking and promotion opportunities by showcasing individual libraries. Encourages membership of ALIA through a stimulating program. Planned activities include workshops and monthly librarians' libations.
ALIA ACT and District Health Forum
Organises professional development meetings to focus on current health and information related areas, considers professional issues and establishes standards to achieve best practice. Shares resources and ideas, experience and expertise. Proposed activities include seminars and survey to determine professional development needs of members. Covers ACT and district, from Goulburn to Cooma.

ALIA Acquisitions (National)
National group aiming to inform and educate by supporting and promoting best practice in acquisitions, collection development and preservation, and to promote use of appropriate and leading-edge technology. Also aims to establish a national forum for the interchange of ideas and co-operation with other sections. Planned activities include seminars and workshops held in major capital cities in association with various ALIA conferences.
ALIA Asia Pacific Special Interest Group National group that aims to increase awareness of the development and use of Asian information resources and of the development of libraries and the profession within the region. Provides a forum for members to discuss regional professional issues and to communicate these to ALIA. Hosts public talks and produces newsletter, which is distributed to members and the library associations in the region three times per year.
ALIA Australian Serials Special Interest Group
National forum for raising awareness of unique issues relating to serials management between information professionals, serial providers, aggregators and knowledge consumers. This includes promoting best practice in serial management across all sectors, influencing optimal distribution and access to serials, and collaboration with other groups nationally and internationally. Planned activities include seminars, workshops, lectures and other professional development activities.
ALIA National Library Technicians
Promotes ALIA and library technician membership on a national basis and actively represents the interests of library technicians in national forums. Ensures the dissemination of information to library technician groups and members, and also provides support and guidance to these when required. Promotional marketing sessions as part of professional development activities. Communication through teleconferences, library tours. Communications include a quarterly newsletter, Technotes.
ALIA Off-Campus Library Services
National group fostering library services to geographically remote or overseas off-campus students. Also ensures that students are provided with appropriate level of library service. Initiates debate on appropriate and quality services, develops best practice or benchmark standards, and raises awareness of the information needs of off-campus and remote students to ALIA and other organisations. Planned activities include biennial conference and financial support for member wishing to present paper at major conference.
ALIA Orana Management and Readership
National group supervising the production, publication, distribution and promotion of Orana, the refereed journal of school and children's librarianship and related issues. Aims to represent subscribers and promote the interests of school and children's libraries.
ALIA TAFE National Group
Facilitates and co-ordinates professional development for TAFE library staff, and promotes and advocates for TAFE libraries and their staff. Develops publications to inform the profession, and performance indicators to be used by TAFE libraries nationally. Activities also include biennial national TAFE conference. Communication includes teleconferences and a quarterly newsletter.
