ACTive ALIA Meeting, 10 October 2001

The meeting opened at 5:30pm.

  1. In attendance: Helen Roberts (president), Jan Gordon (immediate past president), Julie Ward (secretary), Beth Clary, Roxanne Missingham, Peter Judge, Glenis Matheson, Margaret Drury, Prue Deacon.

  2. Apologies: Margaret Shaw.

  3. The president welcomed those present to the meeting.

  4. Minutes of the last meeting:
The minutes from the meeting of 8 August 2001 were accepted.
The monthly meeting for September 2001 was cancelled because so many apologies had been received and there would not have been a quorum at the meeting.

  5. Reports
    • President's report: Helen reported that she had received a response from Judy Brooker to the advertisement in proACTive for the position of local presence officer. A discussion followed on the duties and contract details for the position. The group has been asked to nominate a representative for the National Policy Congress held in Canberra on 7 and 8 December. A call for nominations will be placed in proACTive and replies will be considered next meeting. Roxanne volunteered to be returning officer. There was a discussion on newsletter (proACTive) numbers and funding.
    • Treasurer's report: No report was available.
    • Secretary's report: Julie reported that she had also been contacted by Sandra Reid about a representative for the National Policy Congress. No other correspondence had been received.
    • Reports from Groups:
      Technicians
Beth reported that the Technician's conference in Hobart had been very successful. A letter had been sent to Canberra conference attendees. Dinner at CIT Hospitality was successful. Twelve people attended the tour of the Hancock Library. They are planning a dinner in December. The group is investigating ways of increasing membership. A discussion followed on ways of increasing membership to ALIA and promoting ALIA benefits. At the Hancock Library tour Aska Moir gave a short reply for her recent award. A suggestion was made to ask Aska to the Christmas event so she could give an oral reply and she may be asked for a written report for the ALIA website. The student award held over from the dinner will be presented at the Christmas function.
    • Specials/Health Prue reported that the membership list is very small with only 11 people. A notice which was run in proACTive has resulted in a few more people joining. A discussion followed on easier ways of nominating for groups when renewing membership. The group will be meeting in November and would like to have joint meetings with other groups. Helen commented on how well mixing groups had worked at the Special, Health and Law Librarians conference.
    • APSIG No report.
    • URLs Helen reported that next month Cliff Law, ADFA's academy librarian, would be speaking to the group. The meeting advertised in proACTive was cancelled. The September meeting in which Lisa Bradley talked about Science-based information literacy programs at the ANU and Julie McGorm talked about a curriculum-integrated program at ACU was very successful. The late afternoon session worked well more so than lunch time sessions.

  6. General business
Future activities: Roxanne reported on a UC proposal for research into young people and the library. A video will be produced and shown to young people to see if it changes their perceptions of librarians. There is concern that the profession of librarians is boring and only for old ladies etc. NLA has agreed to help sponsor the research along with internal funding from UC. Wagga has asked ACTive ALIA to give the electronic resources seminar. A discussion followed on the costs involved such as accommodation costs. Jan and Roxanne will drive their cars and can take extra people. Discussion on Christmas party for ACTive ALIA members which may include a Treasures exhibition tour and maybe lunch or drinks and nibbles as some people may not be able to get away from work.

Helen reported that she is on the copyright law review committee which is looking at copyright issues such as copyright verses contract.

Jan has been looking at former branch rules. We need to rethink how our group wants to be formed and how to attract people. We also need to revise the rules and publish them. Helen thanked Jan for her contribution so far.

The meeting closed at 7:20pm.
