ACTive ALIA Meeting, 8 August 2001

The meeting opened at 5:30pm.

  1. In attendance: Helen Roberts (president), Jan Gordon (immediate past president), Julie Ward (secretary), Beth Clary, Roxanne Missingham, Libby Coates, Peter Judge, Jeanette Regan.

  2. Apologies: Margaret Shaw, Glenis Matheson, Marion Boyd, Margaret Drury, Lynn Bale.

  3. The secretary welcomed those present to the meeting.

  4. Minutes of the last meeting:
    The minutes from the meeting of 11 July 2001 were accepted.

  5. Reports
    • President's report: Helen reported that she had received a printed list of members for ACTive ALIA. Jeanette suggested obtaining an electronic copy of the members' list. An advertisement will be placed in proACTive for the position of local presence officer.
    • Treasurer's report: No report was available.
    • Secretary's report: Julie W reported on the preparations for the midwinter dinner. Discussion followed on an appropriate gift for the dinner speaker.
    • Reports from Groups:
      Technicians
      Beth reported that she had received a printed list of new members from ALIA. The Cool Yule dinner was cancelled by hospitality at CIT. The technicians went to Ainslie Football Club and had dinner. Some of the technicians going to Hobart for the conference met at the Waldorf for coffee and they are hoping to get together for breakfast. They will be preparing some promotional material to give out at the conference. Marion Boyd will be awarded the Library Technicians award this year at the conference (the 11th award at the 11th conference). The Branch congratulates Marion on her award. On 3 October there will be a visit to the Hancock Library (Science library at ANU).
    • APSIG Jeanette reported that the lunchtime seminar by Professor Subbiah Arunachalam, Distinguished Fellow, MS Swaminathan Research Foundation, Chennai, India, was most stimulating. He spoke on a number of initiatives that are currently being undertaken by his institution and left a CD-Rom with further information about these projects. Suzanne Ridley, librarian at the Australian International Hospitality School, will arrange a viewing of the CD-Rom to those interested. The next activity will be the informal meeting at the Special, Health and Law Libraries conference. There will be a group meeting on 19 September. Everyone is welcome to attend and they will be discussing the International Relations Working Group.
    • URLs Helen reported that there would be a seminar at Chifley Library ANU, on 18 September 4:30pm-6:00pm, on information literacy in practice. Details will be in September's proACTive.

  6. General business
    Future activities: Midwinter dinner: There was a discussion on final arrangements for the midwinter dinner.

The meeting closed at 7:30pm.
