NPC regional meeting facilitators notes

Papers

Please ensure that there are copies of the following available in case people forget to bring their own copies.

  • Regional NPC meeting agenda
  • Draft NPC agenda for the national meeting in Canberra
  • Background papers for the REAP, CPD and Towards 2010 items on the agenda

Meeting notes and reports

If your region does not have a local liaison officer would you please ensure that someone takes notes of, and writes the report on, the meeting? It would be best if this person were not a nominated group representative as it is difficult to take notes and participate in the meeting.

Reports from the regional meetings are due into ALIA National Office by 15 August 2003. Please send them to membership [please remove the '.nospam' from address].

Regional representative to national meeting Canberra 19 and 20 September

Would you please ensure that the ALIA local liaison officer has the details of the meeting's delegates to the national meeting in Canberra? If your region does not have a local liaison officer would you please contact membership at ALIA National Office with the delegate's details?

Agenda items

  1. Roll of nominate group representatives, and attendance sheet of observers
    • Nominated group representatives Would you please ensure that the group name and the delegates name and ALIA membership number are recorded? It is essential that the group representatives are financial personal members or the designated representative of a financial institutional member.
    • Observers Observers are welcome to attend the regional NPC meetings and, if appropriate, may be heard at the meeting. However, they do not have any voting rights at the regional NPC meetings. Only nominated group representatives may vote at the meetings.

  2. Election of one delegate to attend Canberra NPC
Nominations are to be made at the regional NPC meeting and a vote taken if there is more than one nomination. Only nominated group representatives are eligible for attendance at the Canberra NPC. The elected delegate is to report back to the region after the NPC.

From the experience of some delegates last year it is recommended that the election of the delegate to attend the Canberra NPC be carried out early in the meeting so that the delegate can participate in the regional meeting with the knowledge that they will be responsible for representing the meeting at the Canberra NPC.

  3. Celebrating success
Group delegates are asked to present a success story from their group. The idea is that these stories should contain an element of fun and give delegates a chance to perform. The meeting will need to select the most popular story, which will then be presented at the NPC in Canberra.

The time allowed for each success story should be limited to five minutes - the same amount of time that will be allowed at the national meeting in Canberra.

  4. Research exchange and partnership (REAP) initiative
We are hoping that groups, via their nominated representative at the NPC regional meetings, can provide ideas for research topics, and potential researchers and partnerships for this new ALIA initiative and can consider adding appropriate material to ALIA e-prints.

  5. Continuing Professional Development
What are the priorities for ALIA brokered training? What are the gaps between courses offered through partnerships, ALIA group run CPD activities and ALIA conferences? What types of workshops/seminars are needed to fill the gaps? (Background paper provided).

  6. Issues of critical importance
Identify major issues for the library and information services sector, and ALIA, over the next five years. This is a discussion item seeking the input, ideas, and views of ALIA members.

    * Note that items 6 and 7 are linked and discussion may overlap or may lead logically into item 7.

  7. ALIA: Towards 2010 consultation draft
The Board of Directors is now seeking the advice and input of members on the ALIA Towards 2010 draft through the 2003 regional meetings and National Policy Congress. (Background paper and covering note provided). The covering note gives guidelines for discussion that are intended to get a wide-ranging debate and discussion going and will result in the sort of feedback that the Board is seeking for this item:

    Guidelines for discussion
    • ALIA: Towards 2010 was developed by the Board of Directors and is based on the Board's planning exercise held during their March 2003 meeting.
    • ALIA: Towards 2010 is intended to be a straightforward, clear and concise document that communicates to members and externally ALIA's role, aspirations and focus for the medium- to long-term and provides a framework for development beyond the current 2003-2004 ALIA plan.
    • The Board of Directors is now seeking the advice and input of members on the ALIA: Towards 2010 draft through the 2003 regional meetings and National Policy Congress.
    • We seek your input on both the content and presentation of the draft. You may wish to consider, for example: the issues and priorities for ALIA for the next six to seven years as expressed in the document; are there critical issues for the Association and our sector that have not been addressed; and how well does the document communicate what ALIA stands for and where it is going?
    • Feedback from the regional meetings will be incorporated into a revised draft for discussion at the National Policy Congress on 19-20 September 2003.

  8. Questions on notice
This agenda item is provided to give delegates the opportunity to place questions on notice on the Agenda for the Canberra NPC on 19 and 20 September.
