Responses to election questions:What are your skills and experience in strategic planning and leadership? I am the Course Coordinator for the Queensland University of Technology’s (QUT), Master of Information Management. In this role I am responsible for planning and leading the future directions of the library and information science education in the university. The role also allows me to contribute to the future course of library education in Australia. My ongoing and active involvement in ALIA and other industry committees and boards, including IFLA, Women in Technology and ANZIIL, clearly demonstrates my skill and experience as both a leader and a contributor to strategic planning in the Australian library and information profession. In 2007 I received the State Library of Queensland Board award for significant contribution and leadership to the library community in Queensland, and nationally, in three key areas of research, contribution to professional associations, and education and training of library workers. What are your skills and experience in financial management? I have managed the budget of four research grants that were all successfully completed and ran to both time and financial constraints. I have been responsible for the budgets of the 3rd International Evidence Based Librarianship Conference 2005 and the Beyond the Hype: Web 2.0 Symposium 2008. Both events were a success returning a profit for ALIA. As Course Coordinator for the QUT Master of Information Management I am responsible for the administration of the degree this includes staffing and budget management. I also contribute to the overall financial management of the Faculty of Information Technology. What other skills do you bring as a potential Board member? My work as a library educator and researcher has helped me to develop and refine skills and abilities that will be invaluable in the role of board director. I possess excellent skills in both written and oral communication as evidence by my many professional publications and presentations. I have excellent interpersonal skills and enjoy working collaboratively with others to achieve goals. I am a passionate LIS professional, educator and researcher and I would bring this passion to my role as director of the board. What specific issues interest you, or that you are hoping to address during your time as a Board member? My passion falls within two related areas: (i) education and professional development, and (ii) fostering a culture of research within the profession. I believe a focus on both is essential if the library and information profession is to continue as a strong and dynamic force within Australia. To date ALIA has undertaken some important activities and initiatives in both areas – regular research awards such as Ray Choate Scholarship and the upcoming Education Summit are two examples. As an LIS educator and researcher I am well placed to help ALIA move forward in these two areas. Additional links: |
