ALIA Research Committee

Terms of reference

Purpose

The Australian Library and Information Association is the peak body for the advancement of the library and information profession in Australia. The Association recognises the importance of fostering research which underpins innovation and the improvement of library and information practice.

The research committee is established:

  1. to administer the Association's research fund as set out in the by-law: The Research Fund;
  2. to raise monies for the Research Fund by gifts, donations and bequests from such sources as considered appropriate;
  3. to advance the Objects of the Research Fund as set down in the by-law;
  4. to recommend to the Board of Directors recipients of Association Research Awards;
  5. to encourage publication of funded research activities in the Association's journals and more widely;
  6. to contribute to the development of the Association's policies and submissions in a wider public forum, on research.

Membership

The committee will comprise no less than five members, the majority of whom are suitably-qualified to assess the relevant area of research. The committee may co-opt further expertise as required.

Terms of office

Members will be normally appointed for up to three years. Members may not serve more than two consecutive terms.

Communication

The committee will meet at least once per year, electronically or face-to-face as required. The committee shall report as required on matters referred by the Board of Directors. The committee may refer matters of interest or concern to the Board of Directors for consideration.

Review

The committee shall be subject to the review requirements of the ALIA Board of Directors at least once every two years.

Secretariat

ALIA National Office will provide secretarial support.
