ALIA Public Libraries Summit : 16 July 2009

ALIA initiatives launched at the Summit

New National Standards for Public Libraries
Libraries Alive! will carry out the work, reporting to a specially formed ALIA and NSLA committee. The library consultants will use a similar project carried out for NSW public libraries as the basis for this work.

Public Library Ambassadors
Pilot projects are up and running in Victoria, NSW and WA, with five Public Library Ambassadors recruited in advance of the national launch of the campaign at the Summit.  More information and a tool kit are available on the ALIA website, and you can view the ambassadors on flickr.

Living Libraries
Also announced at the Summit, Lismore City Council Library's award-winning Living Libraries project has been sub-contracted to ALIA to run on behalf of Lismore and its partners, with the aim of expanding the program to more libraries around Australia. http://www.livinglibraries.org.au/

Little Book of Public Libraries
Launched in time for the Summit, this fabulous little book is still available. Order your copies from the ALIA website. And how can you use it? Get lots of ideas from the website.

Summit theme and program

The theme for the Summit was 'Setting a National Agenda'.

The program included the following presentations:

Summit documents

Here is our summary [ also available in pdf 123 KB] of the Summit and the media release.

The Summit information pack was given to every delegate.

Public libraries as national champions

Our aim was for public libraries to be confirmed as national champions, advancing social, educational, cultural, broadband and digital programs and policies, and the feedback from delegates strongly supports our success in achieving this goal.

National framework

Delegates gave ALIA a mandate to lead the development of a national framework, to better enable library services to share best practice, develop improvement plans and speak with a united voice to Federal Government.

What next?

In September 2009, ALIA issued a consultation paper on a national vision and framework for public libraries. In 2010, ALIA will be consolidating responses in preparation for the next step, working through its public libraries group and in partnership with other organisations including, Public Libraries Australia (PLA), the state and territory public library associations, National and State Libraries Australasia (NSLA) and Friends of Libraries Australia (FOLA).
