ALIA Public Libraries Reference Group

Library stars: best of the best

This one-day forum showcased libraries, projects and successes to recognise outstanding achievements in the public library sector and to inspire public library practitioners.

The themes for Library stars: best of the best reflected the CLICK theme for the ALIA 2006 Biennial conference:

  • How do public libraries Create value?
  • How do they lead the debate on Literacy, reading and access to information?
  • What Innovations are occurring?
  • How do libraries Connect with their communities?
  • Sharing Knowledge with colleagues.

The program featured:

Keynote address by Rolf Hapel, library director, Aarhus Public Libraries, Denmark.

Presentations on seven outstanding public library services and programs from around Australia covering:

  • reading and literacy programs - early childhood, local, bilingual and state-wide;
  • an indigenous local knowledge collection;
  • innovative use of digital technology to provide library materials to people with sight impairment; and
  • a program to support and train library staff in one-person library services in remote communities.

Winner of the Delegates Choice Award for the best project presented on the day was Alice Springs Public Library (NT) for Akaltye Antheme: local knowledge collection [60kb doc], a unique collection of indigenous resources, produced for and by the Aboriginal people of Central Australia.

Library stars: best of the best was presented by the ALIA Public Libraries Reference Group and was sponsored by Peter Pal Library Supplier and SirsiDynix. It was a satellite event for the 2006 ALIA Biennial Conference, CLICK06, Perth, 19-22 September 2006.
