ALIA New Generation Advisory Committee

What is NGAC?

The New Generation Advisory Committee exists to help strengthen the participation of recently graduated library and information professionals in the Association. The Committee provides advice to the ALIA Board of Directors on issues of relevance to students and new professionals. The Committee works to provide information to the Board and National Office staff to inform development and delivery of services for new professional and student members, with the aim of ensuring the Association's relevance to these groups.

Expressions of Interest for new Advisory Committee Members

The New Generation Advisory Committee is seeking Expressions of Interest for expected vacancies arising on the Committee in the next few months.

The primary role of ALIA Advisory Committees is to provide advice in the form of identification of issues, opportunities, activities and in general assist in developing a strategic direction with the Board. Participation in Advisory Committees is a great way to further the aims of the Association and may represent a positive Professional Development opportunity for members.

Members considering applying should familiarise themselves with the Advisory Committee Guidelines which can be found at http://www.alia.org.au/governance/committees/.

  • Be available for meetings via teleconference and on some occasions face-to-face

  • Represent ALIA and its values, mission, vision and objects in a positive manner

  • Be ALIA personal financial members or the nominated institutional representative.
  • Have sought the approval of their employer (if required) to be an appointed member to an ALIA Advisory Committee

To apply for a position please submit a short statement (100-250 words) outlining your interest in and suitability for the Committee and a brief CV outlining your experience to the Chair of the Committee, Kate Freedman at skeetakate@gmail.com.

You are also welcome to contact to ask any questions or discuss the role of the committee.

NGAC works closely with the National New Graduates Group (NGG): while NGAC has an advisory role within the Association, the NGG works actively with new graduates to provide opportunities for networking and professional development. Often, the Committee and the NGG work together to achieve the common objective of increasing new graduate participation in the Association and engagement with the profession.

NGAC's current priority projects

The Committee works on priority projects and provides recommendations to the Board for decision and action. Current projects include:

Finalised projects

NGAC has worked on a number of priority projects since its inception. Projects that have been finalised in the last year include those listed below.

  • Review Terms of Reference

As set out in the ALIA Advisory Committee Guidelines, all committees are required to review their terms of reference every three years. NGAC completed a comprehensive review of their terms of reference in 2010, which were submitted to the Board and approved at the July 2010 ALIA Board meeting.
Status: ALIA New Generation Advisory Committee Terms of Reference have been approved by the ALIA Board of Directors from July 2010, next review due by July 2013.
  • Future of the New Librarians Symposium

NGAC completed a thorough review of the NLS model including scoping four potential models (continuation, satellite, integration, cessation) and surveying relevant stakeholders, including NLS4 attendees, regarding the NLS model. NGAC then completed and submitted a Board Paper proposing the continuation of the NLS model with some changes including timing, reporting relationships and succession planning, budget and profit considerations, exhibition and program format.
Status: Recommendation of continuation model made to the Board, accepted by the Board with some minor budget consideration changes. NLS5 is due to be held in Perth in 2011.
This future of the NLS discusses the models proposed in 2009 in greater detail.
  • ALIA elections 2008

To increase new graduate engagement in the election process, and to assist new graduates in making an informed vote, NGAC posed a series of questions to the candidates for the 2008 elections.
Status: Finalised. Responses posted to ALIA website and availability promoted via New Graduate eList.
