| Part 1: Awards |
| 1. |
The Association seeks to recognise individuals and organisations contributing in an outstanding manner to the Association or library and information services with the following awards:
- HCL Anderson Award;
- Redmond Barry Award;
- Ellinor Archer Pioneer Award;
- Excellence Award;
- The Metcalfe Award;
- Fellow of the Australian Library and Information Association.
- Letter of Recognition

2. The HCL Anderson Award, Redmond Barry Award and Ellinor Archer Pioneer Award shall be recognised as the premier awards of the Association. Nominations for each premier award shall be called for annually. These may be awarded posthumously.. |
| 3. |
3. The HCL Anderson Award, Redmond Barry Award, Ellinor Archer Pioneer Award, Metcalfe Award, Fellow of the Australian Library and Information Association and the Letter of Recognition shall be peer nominated. |
| 4. |
The Excellence Award shall be self or peer nominated.

| 5. |
Nominees for Association peer-nominated awards shall not be advised that they are being nominated for an award. |
| 6. |
6. Nominations for the HCL Anderson Award, Redmond Barry Award, Ellinor Archer Pioneer Award, Metcalfe Award, Excellence Award and the Letter of Recognition shall be considered by the National Awards Panel. |
| 7. |
Each nomination shall be accompanied by two written referee reports, and the National Awards Panel may seek further referee reports as required . |
| 8. |
ALIA self-nominating groups shall not note nominations in agenda papers or minutes, or meeting notes or reports to group member. |
| 9. |
The National Awards Panel should base their decisions only on the evidence submitted with the nominations and any further evidence sought from the nominees or referees

| 10. |
The National Awards Panel may determine whether voting on an award is by show of hands or secret ballot.. |
| 11. |
Determination shall be by a majority of panel members. In case of an equality of votes, the convenor of the panel shall have a second or casting vote. |
| 12. |
Nominations must remain confidential and all copies provided to panel members must be returned to the Executive Director immediately following a decision. |
| 13. |
The National Awards Panel shall advise the Board of Directors of the voting pattern for nominations recommended to the Board of Directors for conferring of an award.. |
| 14. |
The award of Fellow and the Letter of Recognition do not have nomination closing dates and more than one of these awards may be made in any year if nominations justify this. A maximum of one award may be made each year for the Excellence Award and the Metcalfe Award and the national awards panel reserves the right not to make an award if nominations do not justify it. The Board of Directors may cite nominations as highly commended |

A listing of the premier, excellence and merit awards and their recipients shall be published in the Association's Handbook. |
| 16. |
The Association may offer other awards as determined by the Board of Directors |
| Part 2: National awards panel |
| 17. |
The national awards panel shall consist of five members appointed by the Board of Directors for a term of two years. |
| 18. |
The membership shall be the immediate past president, two past presidents and two other distinguished members of the Association. |
| 19. |
The immediate past president shall be the convenor of the Panel for the first year of their term and then shall serve as a member of the Panel for a second year. |
| 20. |
Nominations for the distinguished members shall be as prescribed herein. |
| 21. |
The Board of Directors shall appoint one distinguished member in each year, except for the first year of operation of the Panel, when it shall appoint two distinguished members, one of whom shall have an initial term of one year only. |
| 22. |
Members may not serve more than two consecutive terms. |
| 23. |
Nominations for the HCL Anderson Award, Redmond Barry Award, Ellinor Archer Pioneer Award, Metcalfe Award, Excellence Award and the Letter of Recognition shall be considered by the National Awards Panel. |
| 24. |
Each nomination shall be accompanied by two written referee reports, and the National Awards Panel may seek further referee reports as required. |
| 25. |
The National Awards Panel may recommend to the Board of Directors that an award be conferred. |
| 26. |
If a member of the Panel is nominated for an Award, then that member shall absent themselves from discussion and voting. |
| Part 3: HCL Anderson Award |
| 27. |
The Board of Directors may confer the HCL Anderson Award on any person who is an associate member of the Association in recognition of outstanding service to the library and information profession in Australia, to ALIA, or to the theory of library and information services. If the nomination is posthumous the nominated person is not required to be a current financial member of the Association. |
| 28. |
Recommendations from the National Awards Panel for the HCL Anderson Award shall be considered by the Board of Directors at the first practicable meeting following the closing dates. |

Nomination for the HCL Anderson Award shall be submitted to the Executive Director on the prescribed form and by the date determined by the Board of Directors. |
| Part 4: Redmond Barry Award |
| 30. |
The Board of Directors may confer the Redmond Barry Award on a person who is not eligible for associate or technician membership of the Association and who may or may not be a member of the Association, and who has rendered outstanding service to or promotion of a library and information service or libraries and information services, or to the theory or practice of library and information science, or an associated field. |
| 31. |
Recommendations from the National Awards Panel for the Redmond Barry Award shall be considered by the Board of Directors at the first practicable meeting following the closing dates. |
| 32. |
Nominations for the Redmond Barry Award shall be submitted to the Executive Director on the prescribed form and by the date determined by the Board of Directors. |
| Part 5: Ellinor Archer Pioneer Award |
| 33. |
The Board of Directors may confer the Ellinor Archer Pioneer Award on a person or institution that is a member of the Association and has achieved pioneering in new areas of library and information science that may involve a one-off product, a new service or program or development of an existing service, but must incorporate a future-oriented approach. If the nomination is posthumous the nominated person is not required to be a current financial member of the Association. |

Recommendations from the National Awards Panel for the Ellinor Archer Pioneer Award shall be considered by the Board of Directors at the first practicable meeting following the closing dates. |

Nominations for the Ellinor Archer Pioneer Award shall be submitted to the Executive Director on the prescribed form and by the date determined by the Board of Directors. |
| Part 6: The Excellence Award |
| 36. |
The Board of Directors may confer the Excellence award on a person, or group of persons who are members, or an institutional member in recognition of excellence in any area, field or aspect of practice in the library and information services sector. While non-ALIA members are not eligible to nominate for the Excellence Award, the Board of Directors, in consultation with the National Awards Panel, may confer an Excellence award on a person or group of persons or organisation not a member, but in the Board's view meets the criteria and is a worthy recipient. The Board of Directors may also cite nominations as highly commended. |
| 37. |
Recommendations from the National Awards Panel for the Metcalfe Award shall be considered by the Board of Directors at the first practicable meeting following the closing dates. |
| 38. |
Nominations for the Excellence Award shall be submitted to the Executive Director on the prescribed form and by the date determined by the Board of Directors. |
| Part 7: The Metcalfe Award |
| 39. |
The Board of Directors may award the Metcalfe Award to a personal financial member in their first five years of practice in libraries and information services. Achievement would be commensurate with experience and should show a contribution beyond the normal requirements of the nominee's employment. This may include but not be limited to initiative, a commitment to innovation in practice and leadership. |
| 40. |
Recommendations from the National Awards Panel for the Metcalfe Award shall be considered by the Board of Directors at the first practicable meeting following the closing dates. |
| 41. |
Nominations for the Metcalfe Award shall be submitted to the Executive Director on the prescribed form and by the date determined by the Board of Directors.

| Part 8: Fellow of the Australia Library and Information Association |
| 42. |
The Board of Directors may recommend the distinction of Fellow be conferred on an associate or technician member who, in the opinion of the Board of Directors has made a distinguished contribution to the theory or practice of library and information science. |
| 43. |
Before determining whether, in the opinion of the Board of Directors, a member has made a distinguished contribution to the theory or practice of library and information science the Board of Directors shall examine any evidence it considers appropriate, including, but not necessarily limited to:
- a record of sustained high achievement and leadership in the field of library and information science;
- an outstanding contribution to the objects and work of the Australian Library and Information Association;
- academic and professional qualifications;
- authorship of publications on bibliography or library and information science;
- conduct of research or development in any field of library and information science.

| 44. |
Nominations for Fellow of the Australian and Library and Information Association shall be considered by the Board of Directors at its next meeting. |
| 45. |
Each nomination for the distinction of Fellow may be made by any two or more Association members and be accompanied by at least two written referee reports. |
| 46. |
The Board of Directors shall issue to the member a Certificate of Fellowship under the prescribed conditions. |
| 47. |
The Certificate of Fellowship shall be signed by the President and by the Executive Director. |
| 48. |
A person may use the distinction of Fellow of the Australian Library and Information Association only while the person is a financial member of the Association |
| 49. |
A member shall not normally be made a Fellow of the Association unless the member:
- has at least eight years standing as an Associate or Technician member of the Association, and
- has paid all subscription fees due or overdue.

| 50. |
Post nominal letters FALIA may be used by Associate members who are Fellows of the Australian Library and Information Association; the post nominal letters FALIATec may be used by Library Technician members who are Fellows of the Association; Fellows of the LAA may choose to use either FLAA or FALIA. |
| 51. |
Nominations for the award of the distinction of Fellow shall be submitted to the Executive Director on the prescribed form. |
| Part 9: Letter of Recognition |
| 52. |
The Board of directors may present the Letter of Recognition to a person or organisation who/which has rendered a significant, special or specific service to:
- Librarianship, libraries or information management; or
- The promotion and development of libraries or library services; or
- The Australian Library and Information Association; or
- For demonstrating such service over a period of time.

Recommendation from the National Awards Panel for a Letter of Recognition award shall be considered by the Board of directors at the first practicable meeting. |
| 54. |
Nominations for the Letter of Recognition shall be submitted to the Executive Director on the prescribed form. |
