Take home messages
- The Board noted the IFLA decision to move the IFLA 2010 conference from Brisbane to Göteborg, Sweden, and the expressions of support from Australia and from overseas for both ALIA and IFLA.
- The President reported on the outstanding success of the ALIA Public Libraries Summit, particularly the support and endorsement in the opening address by Senator Ursula Stephens. The Summit endorsed ALIA as the lead organisation to move work forward towards the development of a national framework for public libraries.
- ALIA and the state public library associations held a meeting in Parkes NSW in June 2009. This collaboration will continue to capitalise on the momentum of the Summit and this will be the focus of more work at the next meeting in October.
- In response to the Productivity Commission's final report on parallel importation, ALIA has developed some questions and answers which are now on the ALIA website. ALIA’s stance on this issue aligns with our objects and values.
- The Board endorsed an ALIA conference to be held in Brisbane in September 2010 at the Brisbane Convention and Exhibition Centre. Graham Black will be the conference convenor. ALIA has sought input from members via a wiki on ideas and options for a 2010 event.
- The Board endorsed the proposal from the New Generation Advisory Committee (NGAC) for the future of the New Librarians Symposium. NGAC will take on a strategic leadership role. Expressions of interest will be called for NLS5 to be held in December 2011.
- The Board noted the upcoming series 'The Librarians series 2' to go to air on ABC1 beginning Wednesday August 5 and that the ALIA ‘The Librarians’ blog will be re-activated.
