Duties and responsibilities
President
Under ALIA's Constitution and By-law 5, the president is the vice-president elected in the previous year. The Constitution and By-laws give additional directorial functions to the president. These include:
- the chairing of general and Board meetings [Constitution cl.11]; and
- membership of the Nominating Committee which oversees the elections of the Association [By-law 4].
Role of the president
To lead the Association as the chief elected officer, to chair the Board of Directors and, on behalf of the Board, to provide broad policy guidance to the executive director in order to achieve the Association's objectives.
Key duties and responsibilities:
- To provide leadership to the profession, the Board and the membership;
- To represent the Association, and the profession, in a variety of fora;
- To support the Association and its policies internally and externally;
- To exercise the governing authority of the Board of Directors when advised to do so by the Board;
- Plan and chair Board and general meetings, including meeting agenda preparation in consultation with the executive director;
- To act as the main liaison between the Board and the executive director;
- To enforce adherence to the Association's Constitution and By-laws and assure the integrity of the Board process;
- To initiate and lead the Board's process of annual performance review of the executive director in consultation with the vice-president/president-elect;
- To review financial reports submitted by the executive director, and to advise the Board of these reports and any necessary actions by the Board;
- To communicate with the membership on a regular basis such as by way of visits, or in inCite columns.
Vice-president (president-elect)
The vice-president is elected by financial members of the Association and becomes president in the following year. The Constitution and By-laws give additional directorial functions to the vice-president. These include:
- the chairing of general and board meetings in the absence of the president [Constitution cl.11]; and
- convening the nominating committee [By-law 4].
