descriptionThe Australian Library and Information Association (ALIA) is looking for a self motivated, proven, and capable leader with exceptional communication and relationship building skills, to fill the part time position of WA State Manager.

Operating under limited direction, provide high quality management of a number of activities at the local level in co-operation with ALIA National Office. The position is equivalent to a Senior Officer Grade 1 post as covered by the ALIA National Office Collective Agreement 2009-2012.

The position is available on a part-time (10-15 hours per fortnight) basis and includes the following responsibilities:

Responsibilities:
There are five major components:

  • Act as official ALIA representative in WA, including in relation to being point of contact for members and non-members; lobbying in consultation with the Executive Director and key individuals locally; making formal representations, including on non-ALIA committees; and providing local feedback to ALIA National Office;
  • Promote ALIA locally and coordinate promotional activities, including membership recruitment drives and external promotions, such as Library and Information Week;
  • Develop local opportunities to meet the continuing education needs of ALIA members, including organising events and activities and seeking sponsorship;
  • Facilitate communication and coordination between group office bearers in the region and ALIA National Office, including in relation to professional development activities, reaching members in remote areas, group budgets, reporting and finance requirements and running group activities.
  • Assist with national programs, including developing and collating national newsletters, as required.
  • Provide support to local and visiting ALIA Directors and National Office staff, as required.

The position reports to the Director: Member Services.

Knowledge, skills and attributes:

  1. An understanding of the Australian Library and Information Association’s structure, purpose and functions.
  2. Demonstrated excellent written and oral communication skills.
  3. Proven capacity for building effective working relationships with a range of individuals, and representatives of organizations.
  4. Knowledge and understanding of the library and information sector, its current areas of concern, and the general policy and political environment in which national associations must operate.
  5. Commitment to customer-service principles and understanding the importance of quality services to members, and of the role of a professional association.
  6. Capacity and preparedness to work productively in a small, flexible, virtual workgroup environment.
  7. Demonstrated experience in the use of office technologies and communication systems.
  8. Appropriate tertiary qualifications.

Requirements:
Access to equivalent of a home office: phone, answering machine/voice-mail, computer with internet access, printer. Applicants must be a resident of WA.

Renumeration:
The appointee will be engaged as an independent contractor providing services to the ALIA National Office. He/she will be required to have current workers compensation insurance and is not entitled to superannuation or paid leave.
