Reporting to the ALIA Executive Director, the ALIA Public Libraries Summit Project Officer will fulfil an important casual role within ALIA National Office over the coming months. This part-time position is for a maximum of 10 hours per week for the period August 2008 – April 2009. Hourly rate negotiable to a maximum of $50per hour. Other travel and administration costs negotiable. If the Project Officer is located offsite (other than in the Canberra National Office), the person will be required to have access to the equivalent of home answering machine/voicemail, computer with internet access, printer, fax etc.
1. POSITION SUMMARY
The Project Officer is responsible for the effective project management of the Australian Library and Information Association’s Public Libraries Summit project during 2008/09. The Public Libraries Summit contributes to the objectives of the ALIA Plan 2008.
The key responsibilities of the position include:
- Research and preparation of briefing papers and documentation for the Public Libraries Summit, including co-ordination of stakeholders’ papers and contributions prior to the Public Libraries Summit
- Development of papers documenting the discussions, decisions or recommendations following the Public Libraries Summit
- Communication and liaison with members and strategic partners for the Summit in collaboration with the ALIA Executive Director, ALIA Board of Directors and members of the ALIA Public Libraries Advisory Committee (PLAC)
- Representative duties as directed by the ALIA Executive Director
- Support for ALIA PLAC Meetings (agendas and minutes) during 2008/09, as the Summit will be a key project of ALIA PLAC
- General support for the ALIA PLAC in relation to the Public Libraries Summit
2. QUALIFICATIONS AND EXPERIENCE
Essential
- Demonstrated understanding of the trends and issues impacting on Australian public libraries
- Demonstrated ability to research and write high quality policy documents
- A skilled and confident communicator, with high level interpersonal skills, and able to liaise, network and negotiate with a variety of people, including senior management, to ensure positive outcomes
Desirable
- Professional qualifications in Librarianship (Eligible for Associate membership of the Australian Library and Information Association)

5. KEY RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES
Project and Event Management
- Provide input and guidance into the development of the ALIA Public Libraries Summit
- Develop a project plan identifying all administrative aspects of the Summit , including identification of key stakeholders, invitations, registrations/RSVPs, website information, submissions and reports
Partnership Development and Relationship Management
- Identify and develop effective partnerships with library and other sector organisations as part of the project, in consultation with the ALIA Executive Director, Board of Directors and PLAC
- Be a representative of ALIA
Communication and Liaison with Members
- Provide regular information to PLAC and ALIA Board of Directors on the project
- Manage the maintenance of the Summit project website
Research and Policy Development
- Undertake research and develop policy relating to public libraries as directed by the ALIA Executive Director, ALIA Board and the PLAC
- Write reports in relation to the project in consultation with ALIA Board of Directors and PLAC
Support for ALIA Administrative Functions
- Preparation and distribution of all PLAC Meetings agendas and minutes
- Provide general support for the ALIA Public Libraries Advisory Committee during the project
