Note on casual and part-time work
Many ALIA members are engaged in work that is short-term, or for limited hours per week. Much of this work is wrongly-regarded as 'casual' work. Genuine casual work is irregular. Casual employees have no guarantee of continuing work and each period of employment is legally separate. For this reason, entitlements to annual and sick leave do not accrue.

In recognition of this, a loading of 20 per cent of wages is paid in lieu of these entitlements. Employees who work regular reduced hours are not casuals and should be paid as part-time workers accruing, pro rata, all entitlements that apply to full-time workers.

For genuine casual work, the formula for calculating hourly rates is as follows:

[annual salary] x 1.2
52.2 x [hours in a standard week]

For example:

Librarian [extensive experience]

Annual salary $52 000 X 1.2
52.2 weeks
  =   $62 400
52.2 weeks
  =   $1195.4022
38 hours per week
  =   $31 per hour
