ALIA employment pages

Apart from the summary material provided here, there is an extensive range of members-only pagesmembers-only containing detailed information and resources for ALIA members (employees and employers). The information provided covers topics such as changes to industrial relations laws, accidents at work, library workforce data and rights and obligations when facing redundancy.

Update: May

The main news governing employment continues to be the Rudd Government's recent and foreshadowed changes to the Workplace Relations Act. The Workplace Relations Amendment (Transition to Forward with Fairness) legislation took effect from 28 March 2008. The main feature of the legislation is abolition of Australian Workplace Agreements (AWAs).

Other provisions of the Act include enabling the Workplace Authority to have regard in some cases to state and territory laws concerning long service leave as part of the no-disadvantage test applying to individual employment contracts.

Further changes to Federal IR laws will cover minimum employment standards, tightening of unfair dismissal provisions and uniform redundancy entitlements. The Government's timetable for revision of IR laws will unfold during the next 18 months, with all reforms to be operational by 1 January 2010.

Further information is at http://www.workplace.gov.au/workplace/Publications/News.

Salary scales and work level guidelines - Library employees will be aware that the salary levels recommended by ALIA are those paid by the NSW Government to librarians, library technicians and library assistants. These are listed at http://www.alia.org.au/employment/salary.scales/roles.and.pay.html. The job descriptions set out for each grade of the sector are also the worklevel guidelines recommended by ALIA.

The NSW State wage case for 2008 is currently being heard and determinations are expected in mid-June. The recommended salary scales for the library sector will be updated on the ALIA site as soon as the outcome of the NSW wage case is known.
