Blue Shield Australia is part of an international network, often described as the cultural equivalent of the Red Cross. Its purpose is to protect cultural heritage in times of warfare and natural disaster. In Australia, Blue Shield is a committee representing libraries, galleries, archives, museums, monuments, sites. There are links with the emergency services, Defence, the International Red Cross, UNESCO World Heritage and Memory of the World.
Blue Shield Australia runs the annual MayDay campaign to promote disaster preparedness for our cultural institutions. There are four meetings a year of the committee, policy sessions with government, and every few years there is a major disaster preparedness conference, involving national and international speakers and delegates.
From mid-2019 to mid-2021, ALIA will provide the Chair of the Committee and the ALIA Board has asked Sue Hutley, Bond University, its representative on the Committee, to occupy this position. In addition we need a secretary to work with Sue, acting as proxy in her absence, arranging and attending meetings (by teleconference), taking minutes, dealing with correspondence and updating the website.
This is a volunteer position which offers an ALIA Member the opportunity to become more closely involved with other parts of the GLAM sector; gain new contacts and experiences; play a fulfilling role in supporting disaster preparedness, and find a new perspective on collaboration amongst cultural institutions across the Asia-Pacific region and internationally.
The role will suit someone who is keen to build their CV, explore disaster preparedness as part of their professional development, and develop their credentials in the broader GLAM community. You will need to be organised and able to produce documents (correspondence, minutes) in a timely way. The time commitment is approximately 0.5-1 day per month. All meetings are conducted virtually, either by teleconference or online meeting platform. More information about Blue Shield Australia is available on the website. http://blueshieldaustralia.org.au/
Please email email@example.com if you require more information, or with your application (CV and a covering note). Closing date 29 April 2019.
