ALIA education

University or TAFE ... which is right for you?

Both institutions offer ALIA-recognised courses in library and information studies.

  • University
    Librarian courses at Uni:
    • have a theoretical emphasis;
    • may take you further in the profession;
    • enable you to apply for professional (librarian) membership of ALIA and positions advertised at librarian level;
    • at undergraduate level (3 years), library and information studies will be a major focus of the program; and
    • postgraduate courses (2-3 semesters) build on a degree in another discipline and incorporate topics directly related to library and information studies.

You are encouraged to go to university if you would like to work as a librarian and are keen to study subjects in more depth.
