Library assistants
What qualifications do you need?
There are no formal qualifications required for you to work as a library assistant but to enhance opportunities for promotion you are encouraged to -
- undertake Certificate II or Certificate III (part of the Diploma of Library / Information Services) library technician course offered at TAFE; or
- complete the Diploma of Library / Information Services course offered at TAFE to enable you to work as a Library technician; or
- have your competencies assessed against the training package in your current job either by taking a course or through on-the-job assessment.

What will you do?
Library assistants work as part of a service team, assisting librarians and library technicians with library and office tasks and procedures.
Typical tasks may include:
- Respond to enquiries and providing advice and assistance to library users
- Work as part of a team in a library or information service environment
- Identify and correcting minor faults with multimedia equipment
- Reshelve returned library resources
- Show customers how to use information services e.g. electronic catalogues
- Use electronic information management and cataloguing tools for data entry
