ALIA education

Librarian

What qualifications do you need?

  • ALIA-accredited undergraduate (bachelor) degree in library and information studies; or

  • first degree in any discipline AND an ALIA-recognised postgraduate (graduate diploma or masters) course; or

  • ALIA-accredited library technician qualifications (undertaken at TAFE) AND an ALIA-recognised undergraduate (bachelor) degree in library and information studies - it is possible to gain credit for your completed technician course.

Where can you study?

  1. View the list of ALIA-accredited librarian courses
    ... undergraduate and postgraduate courses are listed alphabetically by state and then institution

    Courses are offered through a variety of university faculties and departments including communication, information studies, business, media, IT, humanities and social science

  2. Think about your preferred method of learning
    ... do you want to study full-time, part-time, face to face, online, externally or in a combination of these modes

  3. Review the course structure
    ... content, assessment, cost, length of course

  4. Decide which course, delivery mode, location best meets your needs

  5. Contact the institution direct with any queries and to enrol

Note: all ALIA-accredited professional level courses include the core competencies at librarianship level.

What will you do?

You will have a strong focus on client service and technical skills

Typical tasks may include -

  • Supervising and leading staff
  • Managing a branch library, a section of a large library, a small special library, or a research program
  • designing, directing, formulating policy and applying services to meet the information needs of clients
  • Providing expert advice or consultancy services on strategic matters
  • developing strategic plans, preparing budget submissions and briefings for management
  • managing major projects, including information technology systems and applications in a resource environment
  • providing leadership, managerial and commercial skills and judgement
  • marketing the library and its services

Members in the Personal (librarian) category

  • hold an ALIA-accredited librarian qualification at undergraduate or postgraduate level;
  • may apply for positions advertised at librarian level;
  • use the post-nominal AALIA while a financial member of the Association;
  • may elect to join ALIA's professional development scheme at any time during a financial year ... there is no additional fee to join the PD scheme - it is a benefit of personal membership; and
  • may in time be eligible to apply for the distinction of Associate Fellow
