course descriptionThe MEd(TL) is an external course, offered full-time and part-time. It is fully online, with some core units also offered on-campus.

The course is offered full-time and part-time (external) with some internal core unit offerings. A total of eight (12 credit point) units must be undertaken. This consists of eight core teacher-librarianship units. The course develops theoretical knowledge and practice across education and information disciplines relating to: school library management and design; information organisation; online learning; children’s literature; children/youth culture and popular texts; information literacy and research approaches. Commencing students are generally required to undertake the entry unit CLN646 Learning Hubs in their first semester of study. Throughout the course students engage in independent and collaborative learning through online discussion, independent research, virtual teamwork, creative development, critical reflection and evaluation. The course supports ongoing professional learning through Situated Professional Practice (SPP) Situated Professional Practice (minimum 60 hours) is embedded in the entry unit and continues across the duration of the course. Students document and reflect upon their SPP in a web-based portfolio.

Students may enter the course in Semester 1 or Semester 2. The course may be completed in one year full-time or up to four years part-time. To be eligible for admission applicants must be registered teachers or eligible for registration, and hold an appropriate four year Bachelor of Education degree or equivalent at a standard acceptable to the Executive Dean, or a three year Education degree or equivalent at a standard acceptable to the Executive Dean PLUS at least one year of appropriate professional or industrial experience. On commencing the course students must be authorised by their State government to work with children (eg: Blue Card or Blue Card Exemption Card in Queensland)
closing date for applicationsMid January (for Semester 1) and mid June (for Semester 2). Commonwealth Supported Places are available to domestic students.

The course is on the Commonwealth Government's list of approved courses for student income support (to eligible applicants).

ALIA accreditationThis course offered by Queensland University of Technology is recognised by ALIA for a period of five years, from March 2012 , subject to a satisfactory annual return being provided by Queensland University of Technology and the right of ALIA to reassess the course on the occurrence of what, in ALIA's view, are exceptional circumstances, and in any event, once during that five-year period, and not later than March 2017.
Course Advisory Committee

The Course Advisory Committee productively links all stakeholders in teacher-librarianship education at QUT: students, graduates, professional practitioners, educators and researchers. Members’ activities include: reviewing and evaluating the course; providing advice about current and emerging conditions in the teacher-librarianship and associated fields; supporting the situated professional practice program.

The Course Advisory Committee meets formally once a year, but contact is also maintained between the course teaching team and committee members through a variety of informal means, including participation in ASLA, ALIA and Education Queensland forums, and QUT Information Professionals Alumni events.

The Committee includes representatives of the teacher-librarianship, education, and library and information science community, as follows:
