ALIA's core knowledge statement The library and information sector: core knowledge, skills and attributes sets out the skills and knowledge that members of the profession need for practice and the work-level guidelines describe tasks and responsibilities of librarians, library technicians and library assistants in various library and information settings and position levels.

The association accredits courses at librarian and library technician level. To obtain work as a librarian or library technician in Australia, employers generally require you to hold an ALIA-accredited qualification at the appropriate level.
