The program is designed to give parents an opportunity to share and experience the love of reading with their baby. The program will also give parents practical ideas for using stories, rhymes, songs and music to help babies develop early literacy skills. Merchandise for libraries (including flyers and book packs) is available for purchase through the website.
- Birth to Kindergarten - A literacy program that began in the NSW town of Parkes. From hopeful beginnings in 1996, the Birth to Kindergarten - Spread the Word project (aka Paint the Town Read), has grown to encompass many towns and to address more issues than literacy. Special guests over the years have included Governor General Sir William and Lady Deane, NSW Governor Marie Bashir and husband Sir Nicholas Shehadie, famous children’s author Mem Fox, NSW State MP Linda Burney and Gillian Calvert (Commissioner of Children and Young People). The Governor, Marie Bashir has given vice regal patronage to the project.
The aims of the project are to:
• saturate the town with ‘the message’
• engage the whole community to assist in ‘spreading the word’
• raise the value of literacy in homes (celebration of something gives value to it)
• provide a vehicle for interagency collaboration.
