The New South Wales Governor, Her Excellency Professor Marie Bashir AC, will give the opening address at the ALIA 2002 Conference, which will be held in Sydney from 19-22 May. Her Excellency says she is looking forward to the opportunity to address the library and information services profession - a group that has made an enormous contribution to the quality of Australian ife. 'Libraries provide - for many people - their only access to needed information and literature', she said. Professor Bashir's work in rural and urban environments has allowed her to see first hand how libraries can indeed change lives, from the development of literacy skills through to life-defining decisions, and the joy of enlightenment across diverse cultural horizons.
The ALIA 2002 Conference will be held at the Sydney Convention and Exhibition Centre during Library and Information Week.
Don't forget to check out the details of satellite activities such as the Friends of Libraries Conference prior to ALIA 2002; the ALIA Agriculture and Environment Interest Group (Agendis) lunch time meeting on Monday 20 May; the National Library Technicians Day Dinner celebration, the Australian Serials Special Interest Group (ASSIG) and Acquisitions (National) Dinner and AGM and the OPALs lunch time get together - all on Tuesday 21 May.
ALIA NSW Forum is also investigating hosting a seminar on the implications of the NSW Pay Equity Case after the close of sessions on Tuesday - details of this will be posted on the conference website.
You can also participate as an e-delegate via the Issues Forum and the conference website, where speakers papers will be posted prior to the conference. During the conference, e-delegates will have the opportunity to join online chat sessions with speakers and to catch up on conference information via reading the daily newsletters and information from trade exhibitors.
