Randolph Stow Young Writers Award – No Longer Offered By ALIA

This award was previously maintained by ALIA Geraldton Mid-West Regional Group (this group has disbanded)

The award also recognises the international achievements of Geraldton born writer Randolph Stow, who has given his support.

A project to encourage young writers and to promote awareness and us of library services, the award is organised by the Geraldton Mid-West Regional group of ALIA and the Geraldton Regional Library.

Award elegibility

The competition is ONLY for students studying in the Mid West Region.

The award is for original works of prose or poetry, in ten categories:

  • Lower primary Years 4 and 5
    Prose: Maximum 500 words
    Poetry: No minimum

  • Upper primary Years 6 and 7
    Prose: Maximum 2000 words
    Poetry: No minimum

  • Lower secondary Years 8 and 9
    Prose: Maximum 2000 words
    Poetry: No minimum

  • Middle secondary Year 10
    Prose: Maximum 2000 words
    Poetry: No minimum

  • Upper secondary Years 11 and 12
    Prose: Maximum 2000 words
    Poetry: No minimum

Presentation of entries

Entrants should us A4 sized paper, using one side only. Entries should adhere to the suggested length, and provide a title

Note: Names and schools must not appear on the entry pages, but must appear on the offical entry form/cover sheet

Judging
Entries will be judged by a panel selected by the organisers. Three finalists will be selected in each category

Prizes
All finalists will receive a certificate and the winners in each category will receive cash prizes. The schools attended by the winners will also receive presentations

Closing date
Entries should arrive at the Geraldton-Greenough Regional Library no later then Friday, 2nd July 2010. The award night will be held on Tuesday, 24th August 2010.
