ALIA Information Online Group
Description
Maria Gemenis was an extraordinary and vibrant special librarian who galvanised her colleagues into greater and more purposeful action during the late 1970s with her presidential 'Letter to a Brick Wall' in Australian Special Libraries News.
She foresaw many opportunities for information professionals in government and corporate environments arising from automation and technological advances and a changing workplace. Maria urged information professionals to become involved and engaged by embracing any and every opportunity to be a vital part of these workplace revolutions.
Her untimely death following a marathon running event stimulated her NSW Special Libraries Section colleagues into establishing an annual memorial award which would celebrate the qualities and characteristics that she embodied.
The award was managed by ALIA Information Online Group, following the formation of the group from the merger of NSW Special Libraries Section and the Information Science Section in 2000.
It was made in recognition of an outstanding contribution by a member of ALIA Information Online Group in an information management role or special library environment, particularly in the following areas:
- willingness to share professional expertise
- breaking down the barriers of librarians in isolation
- successful promotion of the library/information services
- achieving outstanding recognition from their parent organisation.
