Introduction to your new ALIAnet e-list
Dear [ALIA listowner]
The e-list '[listname]' has just been created for you. The following
is some basic information about your e-list. You will shortly also be
subscribed to the aliaLISTOWNERS list, which permits you to discuss
general list operation and to seek assistance should you need further
help in your role as a listowner.
Your [listname] e-list list owner password (distinct from your
*subscriber* password) is:
[password]
You need this password to configure your e-list. You also need it to
handle administrative requests, such as approving mail if you choose
to run a moderated list.
You can configure your e-list at the following web page:
http://lists.alia.org.au/mailman/admin/[listname]
The web page for users of your e-list is:
http://lists.alia.org.au/mailman/listinfo/[listname]
There is also an e-mail-based interface for users (not administrators)
of your list; you can get info about using it by sending a message
with just the word 'help' as subject or in the body, to:
[listname]-request@lists.alia.org.au
To unsubscribe a user: from the e-list 'listinfo' web page, click on
or enter the user's e-mail address as if you were that user. Where
that user would put in his or her password to unsubscribe, put in your
admin password. You can also use your password to change member's
options, including digestification, delivery disabling, etc.
You have also been subscribed to the e-list as a regular subscriber,
requiring the use of a different password and different web-based
interface, found at:
http://lists.alia.org.au/mailman/listinfo/[listname]
Again, you can use an e-mail interface as indicated above.
Running an ALIAnet e-list doesn't usually require much work, but there
are a few basic things you need to be aware of. The document at
http://www.alia.org.au/alianet/e-lists/rules.html should be read and
understood before leaping into the fray, and general e-list
'netiquette' guidelines can be found http://www.alia.org.au/.au/alianet/e-lists/netiquette.html - these guidelines
apply across all e-mail services.
If you haven't already, read the documhttp://www.alia.org.au/.org.au/alianet/e-lists/list-owner.html - it covers some
wider issues about e-lists, and is a resource for list management
information. A few important points:
- Privacy regulation [and netiquette] dictate that you _must_ have
the tacit approval of any subscribers that you add to your e-list.
- Most e-lists need some maintenance: if you continually receive
error messages from an address, remove the address from the subscriber
list. If you run into problems or don't know what to do, ask for help
through alialistowners@lists.alia.org.au.
- ALIAnet's e-list service is funded by ALIA members, and run for the
benefit ALIA members and the LIS community-at-large. We prefer that
businesses, companies and other profit-making entities avoid using
ALIAnet to advertise or promote their services.
As list owner, you really do own thehttp://www.alia.org.au/alia.org.au/alianet/e-lists/rules.html again], and have the
final say on what goes on in the forum. ALIA National Office
administrative staff will only step in when asked, or if there is a
problem with the list [in which case we'll communicate with the owner
and let them know what we're doing].
If you have any questions about ALIAnet e-list usage or policies,
please ask Ivan Trundle [ivan.trundle@alia.org.au.nospam - remove the
'.nospam' from address], publishing and communications manager.
Seek technical help from the aliaLISTOWNERS e-list
[alialistowners@lists.alia.org.au] or contact the gurus at
mailman-owner@lists.alia.org.au.
Kind regards
ALIAnet e-list administrators
