ALIA NEWSMaking Australia a reading nation - with The WigglesLike us, The Wiggles want your kids to love books and reading from an early age - it's one of the best things we can all do to help them develop good literacy skills. The Wiggles have thrown their support behind the cause of literacy and fun times to encourage young children to get into the reading habit. You can see them and download other resources at http://www.alia.org.au/wiggles/about.html.Adult Learners Week - writing competitionALIA, in conjunction with NYR12, the NT Writers Centre, Queensland Writers Centre and writingWA, has received an Australian Government Department of Education, Employment and Workplace Relations grant to facilitate a writing competition as part of Adult Learners' Week 2011 with prizes worth $45,000. "It's never too late... to learn to read" is a short story competition for unpublished, new, emerging and established Australian writers. http://www.alia.org.au/advocacy/nyor/adult.learners.html.Victorian Floods Commission submissionALIA joined with PLVN to make a submission to the Victorian Floods review to highlight the impact of the floods on the library community and to focus on the vital role public libraries have played in the recovery process. Adelaide City Council library has released a new app to allow library members to access the library catalogue via iPhone. http://www.adelaidecitycouncil.com/library.html The National Library of Australia's free discovery service, Trove, took top honours at the 2011 Australian Government ICT Awards. Trove won both the 2011 Excellence in eGovernment Award and the Service Delivery Category Award for harnessing digital technology to improve service delivery and successfully linking users to millions of resources online. http://trove.nla.gov.au/. For Victorian public library staff, applications are now invited for the 2011 Barrett Reid Scholarship, valued at $30,000. A new advisory group to the SLQ, The Performance Management Framework Working Group (PMFWG) has come together to develop performance measurement and reporting for public libraries in order to support the ongoing development of Queensland public library services. Bibliostat will enable comparability along with the facility to design reports, define peer groups for benchmarking and provide graphical representation of performance measures. INTERNATIONALChristine McKenzie CEO of Yarra Plenty Regional Library and former ALIA President has been elected to the IFLA Governing Board for 2011 - 13 as the only Australian representative. The International Federation of Library Associations and Institutions (IFLA) is the leading international body representing the interests of library and information services and their users. It is the global voice of the library and information profession. http://www.ifla.org/en/news/results-of-election-of-governing-board-2011. Library staff have joined the public to encircle the New York Public Library's 42nd Street branch in Manhattan in a giant hug to show their support for the public library they love. The protest was a response to proposed budget cuts of $40 million from the branches in Manhattan, the Bronx and Staten Island. In Britain, CILIP reports The National Federation of Women's Institutes are campaigning in support of public libraries. With over 208,000 members and a history of campaigning on a wide range of important issues, the WI is respected as a powerful lobbying force.
