ALIA review of Federal Budget 2011

Each year ALIA provides a review of the Australian Federal Government Budget with a focus on the impact for libraries and the information industry. In 2011 ALIA sees opportunities for libraries to be key partners in the National Broadband Network roll out and Digital Regions initiative. We also welcome the focus on cyber-safety and the Government's willingness to adapt its approach to internet filtering in the light of industry consultation. Other key topics of interest to library and information professionals are literacy, education, early childhood development. The ALIA Budget review can be found at http://www.alia.org.au/

Senate inquiry into the National Broadband Network

The House of Representatives Infrastructure and Communications Committee is conducting an inquiry into the role and potential of the National Broadband Network (NBN). The ALIA submission is located at http://www.aph.gov.au/house/committee/ic/NBN/subs/Sub216.pdf. ALIA will be participating in the public hearing on 27 May 2011 in Canberra.

Standards and Guidelines for Australian Public Libraries

The Standards and Guidelines for Australian Public Libraries were launched on 1 April and can be downloaded at http://www.alia.org.au/publiclibraries. Keep an eye out for additional case studies and resources which will be available in the coming months.

The Library Initiative

The Library Initiative selection process for both participating libraries and suppliers has been completed and advices have been issued. The successful suppliers from whom libraries can select devices are Audio-Read Pty Limited and Vision Australia. Library services from every state and territory have been selected. Over 500 individual library outlets are represented by the Library Services selected. 845 devices will be supplied to these libraries.

National Simultaneous Storytime

Libraries and Literacy

In response to the Innovation & Business Skills Australia report No more excuses: an industry response to the language, literacy and numerously challenge ALIA released a statement, Libraries and Literacy - we're already working on it, outlining the critical role played by public libraries in building literacy standards.

New members to ALIA Board

The successful nominees for the ALIA Board of Directors 2011 to 2013 have been announced. They are:
  • Ms Vanessa Little - ALIA Vice-president (President-elect) - Director, ACT Library and Information Service
  • Ms Kathryn Cass - Coordinator, Library Operations, Marrickville Library and History Services
  • Mr Joseph Cullen - Chief Executive, Eastern Regional Libraries Corporation
The current Board of Directors would like to extend our warm congratulations to Vanessa, Joseph and Kathryn, who will serve on the ALIA Board from May 2011 to May 2013.

Review of Library Technician training

ALIA continues to work closely with employers, educators, Library technicians and IBSA as part of the review of the national training package for Library Technicians. We urge employers to get involved and provide feedback throughout the process.

National Year of Reading 2012 has created a wiki as a collaborative space to share information, ideas and resources to assist libraries in promoting and developing NYR12.

Public Libraries Victoria Network, together with the State Library of Victoria, have launched the report of a landmark study: Dollars, Sense and Public Libraries. The report and research findings are available at http://www.publiclibrariesvictoria.net.au/node/13.

Following the Queensland floods, industry members from across library sectors met on 22 February in Brisbane to provide feedback on the damage sustained by libraries services in the state and to report on disaster recovery progress. Following the Victorian floods, public libraries were pleased to be able to report limited damage. Rochester Branch Library continues to operate with a limited service.

Revisioning the library was the topic for discussion on ABC Radio National Life Matters on 8 April. A team of guest speakers from the LIS industry addressed the changing role of public libraries, agreeing we are front and centre in an age of lifelong learning.
