OTHER NEWSAt its AGM at the end of October, the Local Government Association of South Australia agreed to oppose the State Government's proposed $1m future budget cut for public libraries. The Australian National Living Library Steering Committee has decided that we should change the name of our program to Human Libraries Australia, to fit in with the name change in the 44 other participating countries. This will enable the founders in Denmark to trademark the name internationally (Living Library has been trademarked in North America, Canada and Mexico for a very different concept). http://www.humanlibraries.org.au Victorian public libraries have been told they may get a further $25m from the State Government for the Living Libraries capital investment program (not to be confused with Human Libraries - see above). If the Labor Government is re-elected this month (November), it will mean improvements and extensions for 30 libraries in Victoria. The State Library of WA has made two former librarians honorary fellows of the Library Board. Lennie McCall, retired director of the Battye Library, attended a special event at the State Library last month (October). The award was made posthumously to Kay Poustie, manager of the City of Stirling public libraries for 15 years and chair of the Library Board from 2002 to 2006. The Northern Territory Library began a year-long celebration of its 30th anniversary on Wednesday 10 November. A showcase of 30 treasures from its collection will be on show to the public from 23 May to 26 August 2011. Congratulations to Sydney's Surry Hills library, which has won a prestigious Australian Institute of Architects National Award for Public Architecture for its sustainability features. Williamstown public library (Vic) has moved to the Mechanics Institute while a $7.8m development of its Ferguson Street site takes place. The library will move back into a new building linked to the Town Hall. It has been announced that the redevelopment of the Old Treasury Buildings in Perth will include a public library. In NSW, proposals have been tabled for a $9m new library in Grafton, and for a big new library at Carnes Hill, to replace Liverpool council's smaller Casula and Green Valley branches. Port Pirie's $4m new library has opened in South Australia. It is an extension of the railway station. The winners of Speech Pathology Australia's Book of the Year awards were Our Daft Dog Danny, by Pamela Allen; Isabella's Garden, by Glenda Millard and Rebecca Cool, and Pearl Verses the World, by Sally Murphy and illustrated by Heather Potter. The South Australian Library & Information Network has created a fabulous calendar for 2011 - Attack of the Zombrarians - it's a must for every library staff room. See it in all its technicolour glory at http://www.redbubble.com/people/salin/calendars/6062484-15-zombies-in-the-library. Yarra Plenty Regional Library has chosen Boopsie as its mobile application provider. www.boopsie.com. |
