Public Libraries Advisory Committee half-year report

ALIA Information Online 2011

Registrations are now open for ALIA Information Online, from 1 - 3 February 2011, in Sydney. If you can't attend the whole event, there are day registrations, plus pre- and post-conference workshops. http://www.information-online.com.au/

National vision and framework for public libraries

The third and final round of consultation ends 29 October. Make sure you have had your say. View the final draft vision and framework at http://www.alia.org.au/governance/committees/public.libraries/.

National standards and guidelines for public libraries

The national standards project is nearing finalisation by Libraries Alive! but the project doesn't end here. The national standards will be reviewed regularly to ensure that they remain relevant and appropriate to the needs of Australian public libraries and library users. ALIA REMINDERS

inCite - the Association's magazine - contributions welcomed

'Every member an advocate' is the main topic for November, followed by our end of year issue focusing on IFLA and engagement. The Deadline for the December issue is 1 November.

Lee Welch has taken over as acting editor of inCite while Kate Vanderveer is on maternity leave.

ALIA offered best wishes to Jan Fullerton on the occasion of her retirement as National Librarian at the end of September.

Get ready to squirm in your seat: The Librarians returns to ABC1 this month, with the first episode airing at 8.30am on Wednesday 13 October. More program information at http://www.abc.net.au/tv/librarians/#/front-desk.

Prisoners in the Northern Territory are participating in a rehabilitation program which involves working in Darwin public libraries one day a week.

The State Library of Queensland is home to a plant which feeds off the attention it receives through Facebook. The plant has died several times as a result of too much TLC from its 9,000-plus followers. http://www.facebook.com/meeteater.

The Labor government in Tasmania has been accused of under-funding public libraries to the tune of $1.5million by the Liberal opposition - a claim the Minister for Education firmly rejects.

The winners of the 2008 and 2009 WA Premier's Book Awards were Chloe Hooper for The Tall Man (2008) and Shirley Barrett for South Solitary.

Congratulations to Michele Burton, manager of Willoughby City Library and her team for their success in the Local Government Managers' Association Management Excellence Awards. Willoughby was the only council to be named in several awards, with a first place in the Excellence in Service Delivery category.

Schipol International Airport in Amsterdam has opened what is believed to be the world's first airport library.
