Review of the inter-library loan voucher scheme

National Advisory Congress

Lobbying initiatives

ALIA continues to lobby around the top 10 top priorities identified in our federal election campaign kit http://www.alia.org.au/election2010. We have also been asked by ALIA members in Victoria to take up the issue of people not being able to file their eTax forms at their local library because it uses a proxy server. ALIA has written to the ATO Commissioner requesting a review of policies and software procedures.

OTHER NEWS

The 2010 Get Reading campaign has begun, with the '50 books you can't put down' promotion running in bookshops and libraries around Australia throughout September. More information at http://www.getreading.com.au.

The Children's Book Council of Australia awards have been announced. The winners are Jarvis 24, David Metzenthen; Darius Bell and the Glitter Pool, Odo Hirsch; Bear & Chook by the Sea, Lisa Shanahan and Emma Quay; The Hero of Little Street, Gregory Rogers; Australian Backyard Explorer, Peter Macinnis.

Public Libraries WA has taken over from the Local Government Librarians Association of WA.

Victorian public libraries have been promised redevelopment funding - $1.6m for Nunawading and $3m for Reservoir.

Orange City library collected nearly 100 blankets for the ABC Local Radio Knit-In.


INTERNATIONAL

Bob McKee, chief executive of CILIP in the UK, passed away at the IFLA world conference in August. ALIA executive director Sue Hutley said, "His warm and generous spirit will be missed."

The Geek the Library campaign is being rolled out across all libraries in the US, after trials in five states. It is run by OCLC with funding from the Gates Foundation. See it at www.geekthelibrary.org.

Attendance figures for English public libraries have dropped from 48.2% of adults visiting their local library in 2005 to only 39.4% in 2009.

Veria Central Public Library in Greece has received the 2010 Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation Access to Learning Award.

Mrs Phoon Chew Ping has taken over from Dr N Varaprasad following his retirement as the chief executive of the Singapore National Library Board.
