Book review: Make a difference: a practical guide to lobbying by Senator Guy Barnett

Ballan, Vic: Connor Court 2010

"Have you ever wondered how to lobby most effectively, whether to any level of government or your local council? Senator Guy Barnett, experienced as an advocate himself, as well as a recipient of lobbying as a senior adviser to the Tasmanian Premier and a member of the federal parliament, has written a very easy to read book on using the political process (and media) to advocate for any issue. He provides a clear background on our federal political system and lobbying principles. He emphasises the importance of having clear, well thought-out plans and goals. Influencing government and parliaments through submissions, personal contact and the media are brought to life by very helpful case studies, such as Jacqui Fishwick's campaign to have Australians learn the words to Advance Australia Fair, which resulted in statewide action in Tasmania. His tips for dealing with government and media are invaluable. The 12 ways to deal with the media are a lobbying 101 course that everyone should read. This should be read by all public librarians and should be on your shelves for your local community groups." Roxanne Missingham, Parliamentary Librarian.

Want your story to be published?

Submissions are being sought from librarians around the world for anthologies on three topics: library collaborations with writers, artists, musicians and other creatives; library services for multi-cultural patrons to encourage library use; publicity methods to keep libraries in the news. Articles of 3000-5000 words are needed for the American Library Association publications. More information from editor Carol Smallwood smallwood@tm.net.
