ALIA NEWS

We have launched our new ALIA Guide to Disaster Planning Response and Recovery for Libraries. Download it from the website www.alia.org.au/disasterrecovery and take a look at the other resources now available.

Library & Information Week took place from 24 to 30 May and included a highly successful National Simultaneous Storytime. Northern Territory libraries got into the swing of things with two-way web conferencing linking half a dozen libraries together for a special reading of Little White Dogs Can't Jump.

There's a special rate for ALIA members at the Australian Booksellers Conference on Monday 12 July. Bolinda Audio and ALS Library Services are sponsoring a special deal, which means you can attend the day for just $95, compared with a full rate of $250. Details on the website www.aba.org.au.

Nominate now for the ALIA Library Technician of the Year award. The closing date is 1 July. More information on the website www.alia.org.au.

The Safer Internet Group, of which ALIA is a founder partner, along with Google and Yahoo!, officially launched on 4 June. http://www.alia.org.au/internetfiltering/

Book your place at ALIA Access 2010 in Brisbane, 1-3 September, on or before 7 July and you will still qualify for the discounted early bird rate. http://conferences.alia.org.au/access2010/

Ann Ritchie has been appointed ALJ editor for 2010-2013 http://www.alia.org.au/publishing/alj.

The government inquiry into school libraries continues, with further hearings scheduled for 5 July, Darwin; 6 July, Brisbane; 12 July, Perth, and 13 July, Adelaide. ALIA will once again be giving evidence.
The 359 submissions to the inquiry have now been published on the website www.aph.gov.au.

ALIA executive director Sue Hutley is participating in the Vinnies CEO Sleepout in Brisbane on 17 June. Donations would be much appreciated - http://ceosleepout.org.au.

The National Year of Reading 2012, backed by Australian public libraries (through ALIA, PLA, the state associations and territory representatives) is gaining momentum ahead of its official launch on 14 July at Impact 2010 in Albury, NSW. OTHER NEWS

Jan Fullerton, director-general of the National Library of Australia, has announced that she will be retiring later this year.

The latest edition of the Directory of Australian Public Libraries has been published by Auslib. Contact info@auslib.com.au.

The WA state budget in May not only confirmed $9.30 million for public library funding, but also a boost of $1.628 million for the Better Beginnings early literacy program. In other states and territories: ACT library services have been given $2.9 million by the ACT government for a new library at Gungahlin and the Victorian government has allocated a further $3 million to its Living Libraries capital works program.

Arncliffe library has won a NSW Local Government Cultural Award for its work with multicultural groups.

Wyong Council in NSW has created a trust for its library service, enabling the six branches to apply for funding from philanthropic organisations, with all donations being tax deductible.

The Internet Archive has launched a new service, providing more than a million ebooks in a special format for visually impaired readers. http://openlibrary.org.

Get Reading!, previously called Books Alive, takes place from 1st to 30th September. Register before 18 June to receive a pack of promotional material and copies of the free books - http://www.getreading.com.au.
