LIANZA Conference 2008: Poropitia Outside the Box
2 – 5 November 2008, SkyCity Auckland Convention Centre, Auckland, New Zealand
LIANZA's annual conference is the largest gathering of library and information professionals in New Zealand, and one of the largest in Australasia. The 2008 Conference anticipates up to 800 librarians, library managers, local authority managers and representatives from both the business and educational sector will attend.
The theme for LIANZA Conference 2008 is Poropitia Outside the Box. This refers to the shifting nature of what we do and the world we work in. We have to ensure that we are developing and growing with the communities we serve.
There are only a couple of weeks left for Earlybird registrations which close on 19 September 2008. If you’re planning to attend the full conference, take the opportunity to save yourself or your organisation $100.
None of the keynote sessions have had to change. These are the conference anchors, and we are pleased to have such an array of local and international expertise available to the conference. Plan to be at all the keynote presentations. As speakers indicate their topic areas, we blog these and add them to the conference website.
Remember that this conference is designed to give you plenty of networking time with colleagues and lots of opportunities to have quality conversations with exhibitors. Plan ahead and set aside the time for catching up with the people you want to talk to.
The list of Exhibitors is on the conference website: http://www.lianza.org.nz/events/conference2008/exhibition.html

102 year old Librarian still on the job
While most people dream of retiring from the job somewhere between the ages of 60 and 65, Martha Smith has continued working for about forty years beyond those ages. She still puts in her time every Sunday at the Vinland, Kansas, library that she first started working at in 1926.

Found in Books
Be careful what you use as a bookmark. Thousands of dollars, a Christmas card signed by Frank Baum, a marriage certificate from 1879, a baby’s tooth, a diamond ring and a handwritten poem by Irish writer Katharine Tynan Hickson are just some of the stranger objects discovered inside books at a second hand bookstore.
Imagine what's been found in between the leaves of public library collections! Send a list of your unusual 'finds' to roger@rhcs.com.au for inclusion in a future edition of aliaPUBNEWS.

Why Libraries Are Back in Style
Reading rates are down and Americans say they love casual living. And yet, one of the most popular rooms in big new houses is a library. Rather than being about books, their appeal is often about creating a certain ambiance. - Libraries connote elegance and quality. When the economy turns bad, people turn to the classics. Libraries are especially appealing during anxious times because they project coziness and comfort.

City of Literature (Melbourne)
The Director-General of UNESCO has appointed Melbourne as the City of
Literature to the UNESCO Creative Cities Network. This Australian city
will be joining Edinburgh as the 2nd city of literature in the network.
Melbourne, Australia's second largest city and the capital of the State of Victoria, is widely acknowledged as Australia's cultural capital. From the times the State Library of Victoria was founded in 1854 as the first major cultural institution in the city till today, Melbourne continues its long cherished literary tradition. It is foremost recognized for its rich literary culture, history and creative talent. The city boasts the largest literary publishing sector in Australia, showcased by more bookshops and readers than anywhere else in the country. It hosts a wide range of literary festivals, including Melbourne Writers' Festival, the Overload Poetry Festival, the Alfred Deakin Innovation Lectures and the Emerging Writers' Festival.
With its new title and status, the city aims to increase its international profile by increasing its commitment to literary life. It expects to draw new audiences and participation, local and international, in the variety of literary activities and create new partnership initiatives across public, private and civil society sectors as well as in cooperation with the other member cities of the network. As a part of its bid to be a UNESCO City, the Victorian Government has also increased its financial support for projects such as the establishment of a Centre for Books, Writing and Ideas and the expansion of the Melbourne Writers' Festival.
