Internet in Public Libraries: The ALIA Internet Access in Public Libraries Survey 2013 is now open. We are asking all public library managers across Australia to complete the survey, the sixth in a series of reports that provide the best indication of how public library internet services have been managed, delivered, and used over the last decade. The 2013 survey includes a few questions for the eSmart Libraries initiative and a section about e-books. Responses will inform ALIA in its ongoing engagement with the Book Industry Collaborative Council, IFLA, NSLA, associations representing authors, publishers, booksellers, and individual publishers. Please complete the survey by 14 December 2012. If you have any queries please contact margie.anderson@alia.org.au.

Research Request – Dr Stuart Ferguson is looking for stories, true or hypothetical, in which LIS professionals faced ethical dilemmas in their library/information work and how they resolved such dilemmas. It is part of a research project designed to develop a set of case studies that highlight aspects of ALIA’s statements on values and ethics. The study includes the broader field of information ethics and policy and related collecting institutions such digital libraries, e-repositories and digital archives, and the impact that digitisation and enhanced access have on our information policies and ethical decision-making. You can send your stories, which will be de-identified, via email to: stuart.ferguson@canberra.edu.au

COMPETITION!!
Congrats to Lianne and Douglas for sending us along scary examples from their collection and winning the two prizes available in November. In particular, Douglas’s informational tome on jazzing up denim gave the ALIA team chills!
We’ve teamed up with Big Sky Publishing once again to offer a fantastic reading opportunity. Eureka Stockade is an Australian historical non-fiction titles that explores – and dispels – some of the myths around the Battle of Eureka. A fabulous gift for that Australian history buff in your life – or yourself!
To win this book, please send your name, mailing address, and membership number, along with the answer to the question below, to incite@alia.org.au.
This month’s question is: Who allegedly shouted ‘Eureka’ upon discovering that water displacement is equal to the volume of the mass immersed in the water?
Good luck!
