YOUR ASSOCIATION

  • Copyright - we're on the case: Helen Roberts, the Copyright Advisor on the ALIA Support team is creating a submission to the Australian Law Reform Commission about the issue paper Copyright and the Digital Economy on behalf of the Library and Information sector. In order to prepare this submission, we want to hear from you. What are some of the challenges you face with copyright law as it currently stands? What changes would you make to the law? If you wouldn't make any changes, why? Please, let us know so that we can prepare a submission on your behalf.

You can let us know by joining our wiki http://aliacopyright.wikispaces.com/, emailing copyright@alia.org.au, phoning the ALIA support team at +61 2 6215 8222 or joining a teleconference on 17 September. If you would like to join the teleconference, please email enquiry@alia.org.au. We are hoping to begin preparing our draft at the end of September, so if you could assist us by sending in your thoughts or comments by the 30th of September, we would greatly appreciate it.

  • Funding available: ALIA invites individuals or groups to apply for funding from the ALIA Tasmanian PD Grants Fund. • Library and Information Week 2013 - Thanks to everyone who voted in our poll. We're very excited to announce that the LIW2013 theme is Share Your Story. We'll have lots of ideas, merchandise, and hints over the coming months for how to use this theme to your advantage, so put your thinking caps on - how will you share your story in 2013?

  • RUOK Day - This year, RUOK Day, the day when we're called to action and make connections with those around us, falls on the 13th of September. Take a few minutes out of your day, and ask someone if they're okay. http://www.ruokday.com/

  • November inCite: The Politics of the Industry - in an ideal world, the pursuit of knowledge, education, and access to information would be above the capricious (and dare we say sometimes petty?) world of politics. But our real world sees us competing for money, awareness, and our own values, getting down and dirty in the arena to hold on to what we have and get what we need. But not all politics work the same: Public libraries operate in a very different political environment from special libraries. Academic libraries are different again. And boy would we like to hear from our Parliamentary libraries!

INCITE this month will take a look at those different political environments and how our profession copes with the challenges. So tell us, what are your political struggles? What would you like to say to politicians? Do you try and avoid it, and how has it worked? What about office politics? Are they different in an LIS environment? Deadline is 1 October. All submissions should adhere to our guidelines (found here: www.alia.org.au/publishing/incite/guidelines.html) and be sent to incite@alia.org.au

COMPETITION!!

To celebrate this year's RUOK day, Big Sky Publishing is offering a copy of Life in Limbo, the courageous, honest, and often humorous memoir of Matt Berwick's struggle with depression. Giving a voice to Australian men who often feel pressure to 'stay strong', Berwick speaks openly of his challenges, his relationships, and his day-to-day life.

This competition is open to current ALIA members only. To win, please email incite@alia.org.au by the 10th of September, answering this question: What day does RUOK day fall on in 2012? Please also include your ALIA membership number and your mailing address.

The winner will be chosen randomly from all correct answers. Good luck!
