  • On the IFLA Board:
    Congratulations to Christine Mackenzie on her appointment to the IFLA Board for 2011-2013. Well done to the well-travelled CEO of Yarra Plenty (and don't forget to check out her article on the joys of library tour guiding in your August issue of inCite).

  • It's never too late ... to learn to read' short story competition:
    The National Year of Reading 2012, in partnership with ALIA and Writing Australia, supported by the NT Writers Centre, Queensland Writers Centre and Writing WA, has been given a grant by the Australian Government Department of Education, Employment and Workplace Relations (DEEWR), through Adult Learners' Week National Grand Funding, to run a writing competition as part of Adult Learners' Week 2011. www.love2read.org.au
 
  • Call for papers for the QPL Conference is now open.
    Logan City Council Libraries will be hosting the next QPLA conference to be held from the 26 - 28 September 2011. The conference theme is "What would Andrew Carnegie think now?" Papers are sought for individual sessions comprising 20 minute presentations for the stream "Librarians on the front line". www.qpla.asn.au/events-a-conferences/current-events

  • Booktopia finalist in Telstra Business Awards:
    Finally some good news for a book business Booktopia.com.au, Australia's largest online bookstore, has been announced as one of the four Telstra Business Awards for NSW in the category of Panasonic Medium-Sized Businesses.
 
  • Privacy recommendations:
    The Senate Finance and Public Administration Legislation Committee has released its report on the Commonwealth Government's draft Australian Privacy Principles, making 29 recommendations focused on simplifying and providing guidance on the responsibilities of government agencies and private sector organisations to observe the privacy of individuals with whom they interact. www.aph.gov.au/Senate/committee/fapa_ctte/priv_exp_drafts/report_part1/index.htm
